Modify the Curriculum of a Major Revised 12/23/2014 UF, Academic Affairs
Modify the Curriculum of a Major This process should be used to change the required or elective coursework in a graduate or professional major, or the eight‐semester plan or critical tracking in an undergraduate major. To change the total credits, limited access status, major name, delivery platform or funding model, follow the procedures at http://approval.ufl.edu. Instructions for completing this form are on the last page.
Major to be Modified
1. Major Name Sport Management 2. Major Code SPM
3. Degree Program Name Bachelor of Science
4. Effective Term Summer B 2015
5. Proposed Changes
The following are curriculum requests for consideration at UCC. These items include
proposed general education changes for 2015‐16 as well as additional requested
curriculum revisions for 2015‐16.
Requested 2015‐16 revisions:
Semester 1:
update prefix/number for HUM2305
Remove MAC1147 and revise math to MAC1140 or higher (3 credits)
update GE‐C to indicate this course meets the statewide core
remove “recommend chemisty or biology” from GE‐P/B requirement
Semester 2:
eliminate MAC1114 (2) as math tracking option
replace elective (3) with additional composition (GE‐C) course
update GE‐P/B to indicated this course meets the statewide core
Semester 3:
replace ACG2021 (4) with MAN3025 (4) as tracking requirement (removing ACG
from UT)
Semester 4:
Replace MAN3025 (4) with MAR3023 (4) as tracking requirement (adding MAR to
UT)
Replace electives (4) with ACG2021 (4)
Remove “or GE‐P/B” to indicate the Humanities Statewide Core (GE‐H)
Semester 5:
Eliminate FIN3403 (4) from tracking (moving to approved elective option) and
replace with new required course LEI4880 (3)
Addition of TRSM department elective (3) (to account for 3 credit decrease from
internship in sem 8) (see list of dept electives attached)
Modify the Curriculum of a Major Revised 12/23/2014 UF, Academic Affairs
Semester 6:
Replace MAR3023 (4) with electives (4)
Semester 8:
Decrease SPM4941c internship by 3 credits (from 15 to 12 credits)
Universal tracking terms:
With the removal of ACG2021 and FIN3403 from tracking, there is no longer a need
for 5 terms of universal tracking. The critical tracking terms have now decreased to 4
UT terms.
Requesting the following courses be added to the list of approved sport management
electives:
FIN3403 Business Finance
HFT3512 Event Promotion
HFT4754 Advanced Event Management
LEI2181 Leisure Contemporary Society
LEI3843 Entrepreneurship in TRSM
MMC3703 Sport Media and Society
6. Pedagogical Rationale/Justification
The Sport Management faculty have reviewed the curriculum, specifically examining
the universal tracking courses to see what coursework is fundamental to the Sport
Management curriculum. The faculty have determined that FIN3403 Business
Finance is not needed for students to be successful in SPM4515 Sport and Business
Finance. Therefore, the faculty have requested that the course be removed from the
required curriculum. Students will have the option to take FIN3403 Business Finance
as a Sport Management elective for the Business Administration minor. The faculty
have requested that ACG2021 Intro to Financial Accounting be moved out of
universal tracking, but be retained in the curriculum. This course is an extremely
rigorous course aimed primarily at accounting majors and has a high failure rate for
non‐accounting students.
After reviewing the syllabus for MAR3023 Principles of Marketing, the faculty have
determined that this course aids in predicting the success of students in the Sport
Management degree program, therefore are requesting to move this course into
universal tracking.
The faculty have agreed that a research methods course is needed in the Sport
Management curriculum, therefore, they are requesting the addition of LEI4880
Research Methods in Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management (3 credits) to the
curriculum.
Modify the Curriculum of a Major Revised 12/23/2014 UF, Academic Affairs
The request to increase the Sport Management electives by 1 credit, from 12 credits to
13 credits is to make‐up the difference from removing FIN3403 for 4 credits and
adding LEI4880 for 3 credits to reach the required 120 credits.
The addition of Sport Management electives is to provide students with more options
for their required electives.
We have evaluated internship experiences across the country ranging from 9 credits
to 15 credits. The 12‐credit internship experience is common practice for institutions
with similar degree programs. The internship requirement will remain at 520 contact
hours. By reducing the internship requirement to 12‐credits we have allowed for an
additional 3‐credit department elective to complement and broaden the student
experience. Students will also have the option of choosing a department elective from
a different specialization or completing a 3‐credit practicum. The 3‐credit practicum
option provides students an additional opportunity to secure work experience to
build their experiential body of work. The department electives are attached to this
memorandum.
No impact expected due to change in general education requirements.
7. Projected Impact on Initial Enrollment, Retention, Graduation
With the change in universal tracking requirements, the department does anticipate
an increase in undergraduate enrollment. The department has the resources needed
to handle an increase in enrollment.
With regards to adding a course to the curriculum, the department (TRSM) currently
offers two sections of LEI4880 Research Methods in Tourism, Recreation and Sport
Management. The two sections currently have a room capacity of 150, which should
be adequate to handle enrollment for both Sport Management students and Tourism,
Event and Recreation Management students.
Prepare a document showing the catalog copy with the current and proposed curricula either in a side‐by‐side comparison or edited using the “track changes” feature in Word.
Prepare supporting documentation from other colleges indicating availability of seats in courses that are affected by the change in credits and support for the proposed application, if overlap is a concern.
