This is a power point I used to teach a computer production technology grade 10 class. I was teaching a photography unit and used this PowerPoint to demonstrate both good and bad examples of photography. Myself, my brother, or past students took all of these photos.

Rule of Thirds

General Tips

• Ask your subject to look slightly to the side of the camera to avoid red eye.

• Do not use zoom. This reduces the focus!• Always be aware of lighting.• Light directly behind your subject is generally

a bad thing!• Photography is an art. Be creative. Make your

pictures interesting.

Portraits• backgrounds•Lighting•Rule of Thirds•Include as much “person” in the photo as possible.

Non -Portraits

Group Photo

Photo of a Building

• Lighting• Rule of thirds• Pay attention to various lines and shapes on a

building and how that influences your framing.

Photo of an Object

• Focus• Angle• Background• Colours

Photo of a Room• Have a Focus• Be creative• Remember your rule

Which Photo is Better?

Vegetation• Lighting is very

important• Have a focus. It will

be more interesting!• Try different angles

Candid Shot• You’re on candid

camera!• Take a picture of

someone when they do not know it.

• Make the pictures interesting, they should tell a story and explain what someone is doing.

High Angle

• The camera is generally placed above the subject in the picture.

• Makes the subject look small or powerless

• Move (do not use zoom).

Low Angle

• The camera is generally placed below the subject in the picture.

• Makes the subject look large and powerful.

• Move (do not use zoom).

Silhouette Photo

• This is one of the few times when it is acceptable to have light behind a person or object.

Action Shot

• The picture should demonstrate movement.

• Be creative• Rule of thirds
