The multiple needs of clients with substance use disorders, mental health, and/or health care issues are more complex for clients of diverse backgrounds and challenging for treatment providers. This interactive training will discuss and inform on how a client’s cultural perspective influences behavior within the context of one’s own consequent substance use along with a brief review on the impact of culture on psychosocial domain. Participants will explore the importance of using culturally informed questions to elicit client specific information to identify strengths within adhered to values in ‘their world,’ and help practitioners reframe client cultural values and integrate in practice to motivate behavior change.

Goal: Instruct participants on how the client’s culture can inform practice to motivate and sustain behavior change.

 

Objectives : · Review client cultural perspectives and challenges

· List ways on how culture can influence the motivation to change behavior and/or hinder the recovery process

· List how to identify the strengths within client cultural values and integrate in practice
