5 TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have 37 years of teaching experience, of which
4 years were as a teacher at the Louis Botha
Technical High School and 33 years as lecturer at
educational inst itut ions, notably the University of
the Free State, Rand Afrikaans University and the
University of South Africa.
From my very f irst year as university lecturer I
was involved w ith undergraduate and honours
students and a good twenty years also w ith
Master‘s students in some or other capacity.
Since I began my university career, I have focused
on advanced training of students. Girding my
teaching philosophy is the desire to develop the
ability of students to think crit ically and
autonomously. One of the most successful
methods of promoting crit ical and independent
thinking is to teach students key thinking skills
from the context and domain of their discipline of
study.
