1 General remarks The Euro-BioImaging (EUBI) WP7 meeting was held on May 22nd 2013 as a satellite meeting to the 13th ELMI meeting, taking place in Arcachon, France, between May 20th and 24th, 2013. The meeting was organized in collaboration with WP6. Several delegates of the EUBI WP7 meeting were also speakers / participants of the ELMI meeting, which addresses latest developments in light microscopy and their applications to biological questions. In addition, industrial companies organize workshops at ELMI meetings, where meeting delegates will learn more about the latest commercial developments in light microscopy technology. The scientific program of the ELMI meeting is attached in Annex I to this report. The following technologies, which WP7 identified as innovative technologies for which a need for access exists throughout Europe were discussed at the ELMI meeting: Super-resolution microscopy, high throughput microscopy for systems biology, correlative light and electron microscopy, functional imaging. Further topics of the ELMI meeting were: Probes and sensors, image and data analysis, mesoscopic imaging and biological applications of advanced light microscopy techniques. The delegates of the EUBI WP7 meeting were invited by the WP6/WP7 work package leaders. The list of the meeting participants is attached in Annex II to this report. The goal of the meeting was to have all national coordinators of Euro-BioImaging or their representatives present in order to discuss emerging technologies and their potential for providing access across Europe. A focus of the meeting was to discuss with the national coordinating persons the 1st Open Call for Euro-BioImaging Nodes’ Expression of Interest, which were at that time assessed by the Independent Evaluation Board.

2 Meeting agenda a. Welcome and Tour de Table. b. Update on first results from the 1st Euro-BioImaging Open Call and the

timeline for next steps until operation. c. Supporting activities on national level (IWG, national contact, ESFRI,

ministries) d. Define mechanism for identifying new imaging technologies in the future

for Euro-BioImaging e. Conclusions

3 Discussion

a. Welcome and Tour de Table A list of meeting participants is provided in Annex II.

b. Update on first results from the 1st Euro-BioImaging Open Call and the timeline for next steps until operation An overview presentation on the first results of the first Euro-Bioimaging Open Call was provided by Antje Keppler (presentation is attached in Annex IV). In total 71 applications from 19 countries covering 12 different technologies were received. From these 36 applications covered biological imaging and 9 applications addressed molecular imaging. Further 6 applications were mixed applications of biological and medical imaging.

-‐  4  -‐

The innovative advanced light microscopy technologies identified by WP7 were very well represented in the applications (see Table1 in Annex III). In total 16 applications for flagship nodes offering one of the technologies identified in WP7 were received. Mostly applicants offered more than one of these advanced technologies and often included some of the WP7 technologies in their applications for multimodal advanced light microscopy nodes. This was generally considered as an advantage over single technology applications as it offers the possibility for users to conduct their experiments by using more than one single technology at the same place. This should offer a high degree of flexibility for users in their mission to achieve their biological project goals. The next steps of the Euro-BioImaging Open Call were also discussed. They include: (1) Evaluation of the eligibility of the application by the Euro-BioImaging project administration, (2) Evaluation of applications by Independent Evaluation Board (IEB) members, (3) IEB member meeting for final assessment of results, (4) Forwarding results to applicants.

c. Supporting activities on national level (IWG, national contact, ESFRI, ministries) Antje Keppler also presented information on steps to be taken after the first Euro-BioImaging open call evaluation (see Annex IV). These include for node applicants the contacting of national funding bodies to secure funding of the nodes, further national networking with technology experts and potential users with the ultimate goal to implement the respective Euro-BioImaging node. The information provided was generally considered as very useful and the strategy for final implementation was positively accepted amongst the participants.

d. Define mechanism for identifying new imaging technologies in the future for Euro-BioImaging A major topic for the discussion during the meeting was the strategy to be applied in the future for the identification of new imaging technologies for which a strong demand for access exists within Europe. Several ideas to identify new innovative techniques in WP7 were suggested and discussed:

1. A session “Emerging Techniques” was suggested to be included into future ELMI meetings. Developers of new innovative techniques could be invited to present during this session, or can submit an abstract without prior invitation, thus lowering the chance to miss promising techniques. It was concluded to include such a session already into the ELMI 2014 meeting. Oddmund Bakke, the organizer of ELMI 2014 agreed to implement such session.

2. It was discussed whether a similar session could be included into the Focus on Microscopy Meeting (FOM). The conclusion of this discussion was that it would most likely not be suitable to organize such a session during FOM, as the format of the meeting may not allow this in contrast to ELMI meetings. However, as during FOM usually a large number of technology developers are presenting their techniques, it was suggested to use FOM as a platform to

-‐  5  -‐

scout for potential innovative techniques, which could then be presented e.g. during an ELMI meetings in the Emerging Techniques session.

3. It was proposed to most importantly implement tools that question the need by users for new innovative technologies. One possibility to implement this could be by web-based tools, which invite potential users to make suggestions for techniques for which they have a strong demand for access. A second means to interrogate user needs, that was considered as very useful, was to conduct regularly Euro-Bioimaging surveys as they were already conducted by Euro-Bioimaging with the aim to explore the needs for access to innovative imaging technologies.

Conclusion

Finally, the participants of the meeting concluded on the following procedure for identifying and implementing new innovative advanced light microscopy techniques in Euro-Bioimaging

1. • Identify emerging imaging technologies (e.g @ELMI or like meetings)

2. • Demonstrate first usage based on selected biological applications

3. • Demonstrate user need for access to (new) imaging technology (e.g. surveys)

4. • Develop research infrastructure model for providing open access to this imaging technology

5. • Demonstrate feasibility fof providing access (Proof of Concept Studies (PCS) or equivalent)

6. • Open Call for Nodes
