Introduction to Datastream Advance

This eTraining course will effectively illustrate the intuitive and easy-to-use data engines in Datastream. At the end of this session you will learn •The basic functionality of Datastream Advance enabling you to make use of DataStream's global cross-asset database •The different ways to look up series codes with Datastream Navigator in order to easily find the series you will use in Datastream analytical programmes •How to download Datastream historical data into Excel

Datastream Overview

• Gives you access to the world’s largest and most

respected historical financial numerical database.

• Provides a range of charting and reporting tools that

enable you to manipulate and display, or simply download

that data in the way that you want and even export them

directly to Excel, Word, or PowerPoint

Data Selection Process

Datastream provides an easy to use interface with most options for standard requests selectable by mouse click. Start by selecting a data category and follow this sequence to generate the output you require:

Exercise

• Retrieve Hitachi Balance sheet. I would like to see the data for the last 5 years and also I would like to have data on my excel spread sheet.

• Retrieve Company performance overview of Sony Corp. for the last 5 years. I would like to have the data exported to excel.

Datastream Navigator – Search

Datastream Navigator enables you to find and select series and data types for use in Datastream Advance. It is constantly up-to-date so there is no need to refresh any code database. The Database Navigator provides different levels of searching, enabling users to find and select series as effectively as possible through the Criteria Search, Explorer and Free Text Search

Request Table The Request Table enables you to define the detail

of each request –series, lists, expressions, datatypes, dates and the format, and control the updating of the requests, to facilitate the creation and modification of complex models.

Exercise • I would like to retrieve Yahoo Inc, Toyota and

Google’s Price, EPS and Total return Index as of 2010/Jan/4.

• I would like to retrieve Nikkei 225 constituent equities for last 5 days historical data of Price, EPS and Total return Index. The constituent equities should be listed vertical and days horizontal.

• I would like to retrieve Hitachi Industrial balance sheet for the last 7 years.

• Retrieve all above data on Request Table

The Extranet is a support tool created to help users get the most out of Datastream. It contains information on new content and functionality and an increasing range of spreadsheets, documents and presentations showing how Datastream charts and data can be used in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Self Help and Support

The Helpdesk can resolve queries or issues on product functionality, technical product issues, product connectivity, data and content, entitlements, training requests as well as directing general queries and feedback.

The helpdesk operates 24/7. For many countries a service in native language is available during core hours.
