Happy 2015! My wish for all Alpha Pi members is a healthy and prosperous

year. I’m hoping that everything in your classrooms is running smoothly.

I look back at 2014 with thankfulness to all the chapters that invited me to visit.

It was so nice to meet and get to know all of you. You all were so kind, helpful,

and friendly. You made my trips from east to west and north to south so enjoy-

able. I do, however, still need to visit a few more chapters – just waiting for the

invites.

As I visited each chapter, the one thing that came up at each meeting was:

“How do we get new members?”; “How do we keep our present members?”

and “How do we get back our former members”? There are some wonderful

articles in the Jan./Feb. 2015 issue of the “DKG News” on this very topic. You

can download this issue by going to www.dkg.org . Dr. Lyn Babb Schmid, our

2014-2016 International President has an article about the “3M’s (meaningful,

motivational, and memorable) of Membership Engagement”. Also in this issue

the question “Why be members of DKG?” is addressed. It asks, ”Is it the net-

working?”, Is it the collaboration?”, “Is it the engagement?”, “Is it the opportu-

nities DKG provides?”, or is it the genuine spiritual fellowship?” I encourage eve-

ryone to read this Jan../Feb. issue of “DKG News” It is truly very interesting and

inspiring.

I would also like to take this time to remind everyone to make sure their reports

have been submitted. I have received some, but there are a few that I still need

by February 1st . Thank you for your cooperation.

Again, a healthy and prosperous 2015 to all of you.

Jan Weier, 60, passed away peacefully on October 10,

2014 at her home in Freeman, SD.

She graduated from Freeman HS in 1972 and received

her

Bachelor's of Music Education from Augustana College

in Sioux Falls in 1976. She married James Weier on

June 15, 1986. She was an amazing mother to five

children: Matthew, Jacqueline, Jacob, Jennifer, and Jo-

seph.

Jan began her music teaching career in Centerville and

Elk Point, SD. She later returned to Freeman and taught Vocal Music there through 2014.

Jan became a member of the Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma in 2002.

Devotion to God and her family were important priorities for Jan. She enjoyed cooking, bak-

ing, playing piano and organ, playing games, and supporting and sharing laughter with her

children. She was a model of determination and hope, as a complaint was never heard

throughout her battles with breast and brain cancer. Jan will be remembered for her

strength, faith and joy in living.

Note: Please send original pictures rather than copies of newspaper clippings. I am sorry, but I cannot always convert those pictures to put into the newsletter. Also, please send captions for pictures as that adds interest and helps us get to know each other. Let’s try to get a submission from all chapters for the next newsletter!

Kappa:

Our Kappa Chapter Christmas get together was held on November 22. We had a gift

exchange. Members were to bring a gift that started with the letter N (the Chapter

President’s initial). We rolled doubles with the dice to choose a gift. The most sought

after gift was the bag of “Nothing”.

February 21 will be our legislative meeting with Kathy Tyler with updating us on the

happenings in Pierre. We will also be selling Herbergers Coupon Booklets as a fund

raiser.

A spring theme meeting is planned for April. Our program will be on gardening and

potting ideas. A quarter auction will be held as a fund raiser. Each member will bring a

spring item for the auction to get us ready for the summer.

Lambda: Lambda Chapter celebrated the holiday season with a dinner meeting and Silent Auction to raise money for the joint DKG/AAUW Scholarship. The scholarship is award-ed annually to a DSU education major.

The first meeting of 2015 found members meeting for dinner and enjoying a pro-gram by three teachers at area Hutterite Colonies. We learned about the joys and chal-lenges of teaching in multi-level classrooms and how the teachers work with students who speak German as their primary language. We also learned many interesting facts about colony life and how new colonies are formed.

The next two meetings will feature a panel of “Yearlong Residency Student Teach-ers” and a panel of “First-year Teachers.” We look forward to learning more about stu-dent teaching for a full year, as well as hearing about first-year teachers’ adventures in the classroom!

Mu: Mu Chapter of Sioux Falls awarded classroom scholarships to two of its members to help fund their classroom projects. Recipients of the awards are Dar Steenholdt, human services instructor at Career and Education Academy, and Cathy Regas, business/computer instructor and department chair at Roosevelt High School. Dar’s students are involved in selling healthy snacks to fundraise for Skills USA participation and competition. Cathy’s personal finance students are product testing and comparison shopping first-hand, while learning how to be savvy shoppers. Mu Chapter is pleased to support its members with monetary funds for the benefit and enhancement of student learning experiences in their classrooms.

There are also hostelship funds available for travel. Check it out as deadline for "study money " is Feb. 1 and it isn't too soon to begin the process.
