Democracy and Capitalism…cont’d

10 steps to democracy…

Do we have democracy? “How much?”

What are the barriers to democracy??

Capitalism: Building on the Love Story

Private ownership of the means of production, creation of goods or services for profit in a market, and prices and wages are elements of capitalism (Tormey, 2004).

“Do we mean by ‘capitalism’, as we are going to use the term, merely the fact that all means of production are privately owned?

Or do we also want to include under the term the further idea of a free market as the determining mechanism of price, wages, profit?” (John S. Mills, 1959)

Is Capitalism a Disease? (Levins, 2003)

• Capitalism: “the political economic system, based on private property and private profit (Bannock, Baxter, Reese)…”so that the economy can grow indefinitely”

• How does capitalism impact health over time? Why are health outcomes getting worse for many people? Why will you be the first generation who will not likely live as long as their forbearers?

Global Income inequality: The GINI Coefficient

• A number between 0 and 1 where 0 corresponds with perfect equality (where everyone has the same income), and 1 corresponds with perfect inequality (where on person has all the income and everyone else has zero income)
