DENGUE

Dengue is spread by the bite of an ‘Aedes aegypti’ Mosquito .

Symptoms. . .

High fever Severe headache, body ache Severe eye pain (behind eyes) Red spots Muscle and/or bone pain Rash Low white cell count Mild bleeding manifestation (e.g.,

nose or gum bleed)

Symptoms. . .

• Go IMMEDIATELY to an emergency room or the closest health care provider if any of the following warning signs appear:

• Temperature declines 3 to 7 days after symptoms began. • Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting • Red spots or patches on the skin • Bleeding from nose or gums • Vomiting blood • Black, tarry stools (feces, excrement) • Drowsiness or irritability • Pale, cold, or clammy skin • Difficulty breathing

Prevention . . .

• Control or eradication of the mosquitoes carrying the virus that causes dengue.

To prevent mosquito bites, wear long-sleeved shirts,

long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors.

Choose light-colored clothing instead of dark clothing

Install mosquito screens on windows

For personal protection, use mosquito repellant sprays that contain DEET when visiting places where

dengue is endemic.

They bite during early morning hours, before day break and in the late afternoon before dark.

Cover overhead tank to prevent access

Eliminate stagnant water at home, workplaces and their vicinity.

Eliminate breeding sources (unused plastic pools, old tires, or buckets and clearing

clogged gutters)

Use citronella oil-based creams and sprays or other mosquito repellents

Replace water in flower vases once a week
