This project explores the design of vertical surfaces within a slot site in Washington, DC.

The volumetric possibilities of a cube are explored through the push and pull of different components past the main structural grid. Some bays project as balconies while others recede beyond the grid, creating loggias. The space between the grid and the wall behind it creates a large balcony for public rooms on the third floor.

This project examines urban design through the analysis of Chestertown, Maryland, a prototypical American small town.

Our proposed plan revived the waterfront of Chestertown through the insertion of new commercial and industrial centers. Historic train tracks are converted into a new lightrail system that ends in a mixed use piazza which incorporates housing above. Residential density is restored throughout surrounding areas to support new commercial and industrial activies.

All drawings are collaborations between Marisa Gomez, Amber Wendland, and Carolina Uechi.

L I B R A R YThis project explores civic building design within the urban context of Chestertown, Maryland.

The division of public reading rooms and privately rented meeting spaces creates an outdoor courtyard that will sponsor community activies. A double height reading room opens to a loggia which overlooks the garden. The urban scale of this project is consistent with surrounding buildings to create a sense of continuity along the street.

This project explores the juxtaposition of spaces for living and working within the urban environment of Washington, DC.

Spaces for creation and exhibition are integrated with living spaces for art students. Each apartment unit has dedicated studio space. A sense of promenade is created by linking indoor gallery space to an outdoor sunken sculpture garden.

ARTIST HOUSING

Gallery space maintains the commercial edge along Fourteenth Street. Residential units line Corcoran to continue the private nature of the street. Units are organized similar to traditional row houses in the area. A functional thick wall in each apartment creates storage and poche areas.

M A R I T I M EM U S E U MThis project explores ceremonial promenade and the idea of display through a rowing museum in Washington, DC.

The Maritime Museum anchors the west end of Georgetown Waterfront park in Washington, DC. Two interlocking volumes form the museum building. The overlap between these volumes is emphasized as the main circulation zone which connects both darker and lighter gallery spaces .

Differing structural systems articulate the contrast between the two volumes. Boats are displayed in the open glassy volume while historic maritime artifacts are protected within the heavier volume.
