Portfolio

• Check the portfolio checklist early

• Be tactical

• Don’t double up

• Be realistic

• Eg extra degrees

• Use the checklist as a guide for setting your learning

objectives

Portfolio checklist

Publications

• Can take up to 1 year

• Something to start now rather than in CT2

• Supervisor

• Time intensive

• Unlikely to be a quick win

• Check the journal

• Might not count at interview

• Check the small print

• Abstract/ letter to editor/ clinical skills

Surgical experience

• Number of specific type of procedure

• Consider rotations

• Discuss this with your educational supervisor early

• Which lists to target

• Move on when you have full points

• Remember evidence

Presentations

• Check deadlines and conference dates

• Often a good place to also win a prize

• Tips from other trainees – which conferences to target

• Might not have to be specialty specific eg CMT

Audits

• Read the portfolio checklist carefully

• How many single / complete loops

• Do at least the specified number

• Team up with another trainee

Teaching

• Organising a course

• Speak to supervisors – are they involved in any courses?

• Early years or GP training

• ATLS/ BSS

• Have you already been involved in running a course?

• Get the evidence early

Easy wins

• Courses

• ATLS, CCRISP, BSS

• IPLS, radiology courses

• Teaching the teachers

• Leadership roles

• Read the notes carefully

• Might not count MDT/ rota co-ordinator

• Extra-curricular

• Management/ leadership/ teamwork

• Sports teams

In Summary…

• Review the portfolio checklist early

• Use this to set learning objectives

• Get all the easy wins

• Be tactical!
