Ophthalmological PrizeThe council of the Ophthalmological Society of the United

Kingdom has- instituted the Treacher Collins prize (£100)’

which is to be awarded triennially for the best essay on asubject selected by the council. The subject for the nextaward is the Eye in General Vascular Disease. Essays shouldreach the hon. secretary of the society, 45, Lincoln’s Inn Fields,London, W.C.2, not later than Dec. 31, 1953.

Committee on PoliomyelitisThe Royal College of Physicians of London has set up a

committee " To provide those working on the aetiology,epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of poliomyelitis withopportunities for the exchange of information and the dis-cussion of common problems." Those interested in these

problems are asked to write to Dr. W. Ritchie Russell, secretaryof the committee, at the college, Pall Mall East, S.W.I.

Education of Handicapped Children in ScotlandA Working Party has been set up under the chairmanship

of Dr. John Jardine by local-authority associations in Scotlandand educational and medical bodies to consider the reportsissued by the Advisory Council on Education in Scotlandon the education of physically and mentally handicappedchildren, and of those who are socially deprived. The

Working Party will suggest how best a coordinated plan on anational basis can be evolved to help every handicappedchild no matter where he lives. Harveian Society of LondonThe Buckston Browne-Gray Hill dinner of this society was

held at the Royal College of Surgeons on May 15. Dr. JamesBarnett, the president, replying to the toast of The Society,proposed by Sir Harry Brittain, said that very little wasknown about the private life of William Harvey, but it waspossible to get some glimpses of it from 17th-century writings,and particularly from Pepys. One of the interesting factsthat emerged was that Harvey, as physician to the courtof Charles I, had been entitled to three meat dishes at

every meal. Mr. D. N. Matthews, an honorary secretaryof the society, welcomed the guests, and recalled that in1902 Sir Harry had been a founder member of the Pilgrims’Society, and had done a great deal to encourage cooperationand friendship in the English-speaking world. Sir William

Haley, director-general of the B.B.C., replying to Mr. Matthews,thought that in, 30 years of broadcasting the handling ofmedical subjects, had been one of the biggest responsibilitiesof the B.B.C. ; and the coming of television had made thatresponsibility all the greater. Sir Cecil Wakeley, P.R.c.s.,also spoke for the guests, and commended the society for itsprogressive attitude.
