WHAT IS DIATOMS
• Diatoms is a major group of eukaryotic algae.
• and are one of the most common types phytoplankton.
• Diatoms form intricately patterned shells made of silica a glass like substance.
WHAT HAPPENEDS WHEN DIATOMS DIE
• When diatoms die their shells settle to the ocean floor.
• Humans harvest fossilized deposits of these shells to make detergents, fertilizers, paint remover, and insulators.
Salt water centric diatom
Salt water centric diatom frustules skeleton. Diatoms are microscopic, unicellular algae that produce intricate silica glass cell walls that overlap like the top and bottom of a box. When diatoms die, their soft, internal parts deteriorate, leaving their hard, porous, glass skeletons behind.
