What does all this mean for the Irish Higher Education Sector?
10 things we have learnt
1 Strong move to cloud-based hosting for teaching and learning applications
• What does this mean for the type of support we now need from IT Departments in our institutions?
2 Funding does not necessarily enable strategic planning
• Lack of visibility of budget beyond one year –how might this be addressed?
3 Extend shared service provision
• Who informs the decision and who makes it?
- Need to ensure that those who make the decisions understand how the service will/is being used in the sector.
4 Information on Traffic flows
•Now that we have information on traffic data and international comparisons
– What does this mean?
– What questions does it raise?
5 Decision-making within institutions
•Is a more strategic approach required?
• Is the importance of IT infrastructure strategy and planning addressed/understood at the most senior level within an institution?
6 Staff usage of their own devices
•What data protection issues does the increased use by staff of their own devices raise for the sector?
– How can both the staff and the institution be protected?
7 Lack of an evidence base on student, skills, devices, Wi-Fi access etc.
•How can we address this lack of data at a National Level?
• What does being a ‘Digital Student’ mean on a mainstream campus?
8 Consistency and standardisation versus innovation
•The increased use of freeware by staff is innovative but how can this be supported (or should it be) at an institutional level?
• How can we as a sector share information on digital tools more effectively?
9 Digital content licensing practices need
to be reviewed
• Are some students being disadvantaged? If so, how (or should) this be addressed?
10 Different lenses - different insights
•What does the review say about what is good digital practice for the whole sector?
• What does it say is good practice for Teaching and learning?
Thank you for your time
