A process of measurement, analysis and evaluation of a chosen ‘dwelling’ space that holds particular meaning. In this case: my attic bedroom.

Development of a housing scheme masterplan on a site in Grangetown. The design, at this stage,was a collaborative effort. A defining concept is the inclusion of allotments, a market place and arestaurant.

Further development of the the previous masterplan work, concerning one specific chosen dwelling.The typology is a live/work unit, that addresses the public street at one facade and a communalcourtyard at the other.

An analysis exercise, working in a group, that looks at Historical Layering within the town of Pontypridd.

The inherent geometry of the room from the shape of the pitched rafters, although perhaps not best suited in terms of headroom and using the space fully, creates a sense of enclosure and protection, a coziness that is often lost in modern houses.

Pictures and words that evoke memoriesThe walls of my room are covered with posters,scribbles, graffiti, post-its and images that recalldifferent moments spent in the room. In a sense,a graphic documentation of events that havetaken place there. Here, I have mapped eachand every piece of it, in a collaged format usingPhotoshop.

This project involved the outline and general scheme design (to be taken further individuallyafterwards) for a sustainable housing project, with provision of around 12-15 dwellings. Thesite, situated in Grangetown, is within an area that is in much need of rejuvenation andreconnection with the larger scale city. Our porposal attempts to redress the balance, andcreate a devolpment that bridges the gap to central Cardiff, engages the local community,and encourages families to build a home here.

Dwelling Placement

Having established a common masterplan within a group, the next stage was to furtherdevelop one single dwelling, looking at the layout, materials and construction in detail, as well as how the individual dwelling relates to the surrounding context. My chosenunit allowed for the option of a live/work segregation, whilst also aiming at being ableto adapt over time and be flexible to meet the occupants needs.

CONCEPT BOARD

One of the key driving concepts of the project was the inclusionof a market place: a space that engages the local and more widespread community, brings people together, could provide a liftto the economy and culture of the immediate area, and promotea healthy way of living. In architectural terms, concepts includedtranslucency, a playful push/pull manipulation of forms, and theuse of an extruded rectangular form to make up the dwellings.

Ethnicity analysis of Chicago

This project involved the site analysis of Pontypridd in groups. Our area of study concernedHistorical Layering. The above precedent was used to help establish a particular way ofanalysis, which was then applied to Pontypridd. My interpretation of the brief was to takemaps from different eras, dating 1870 to current day, and lay a grid over these. The grid wasthen systematically filled in to represent different types of landscape or infrastructure (e.g. residential, greenery, main access routes, etc.)
