When a beam of light is light is passed through a prism, it is

spread out by the prism into a band of different colours, i.e;

Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red. (VIBGYOR)

Violet 400- 440

Indigo 440- 460

Blue 460- 500

Green 500- 570

Yellow 570-590

Orange 590- 620

Red 620-700

Dispersion

The phenomenon of splitting of visible light into its constituent colours is Dispersion. An array of constituent coloursformed as a result of dispersion is the Spectrum.
