    Space Challenges

Growing enrollment presents a real challenge for Delaware City Schools. Five out of eight of the district’s schools are above their designed educa onal capacity. Three schools use trailers as classrooms, and other schools are using hallways and common spaces to hold classes. While the schools have done a great job adap ng to the increased enrollment, it is essen al to give students proper learning spaces for con nued success.

    Enrollment

Delaware City Schools has experienced steady growth over the past 25 years. Since the last new building (Dempsey) was constructed in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 1400 students. Growth projec ons indicate that enrollment will increase by 500 more students by 2020.

    The Facilities Plan

The DCS facili es commi ee studied many op ons to address overcrowding in the schools. The recommended plan is the most cost eff ec ve op on that addresses the needs of the district and maintains our neighborhood schools. The plan u lizes exis ng schools without construc ng new buildings or redistric ng.

    • Addi ons and renova ons to the fi ve elementary schools to accommodate students in preschool through grade 5.• Sixth grade students will be located in a new wing at Dempsey Middle School.• Addi ons and renova ons at Rutherford B. Hayes High School to accommodate increased enrollment and improve classrooms and extracurricular facili es.• Willis will house district offi ces, educa onal programs and be made available for community use (offi ce space, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, etc.).

    Stewards of Your Tax Dollars

Delaware City Schools is commi ed to being responsible stewards of our community’s tax dollars. Our district spends less per pupil than nearly any other district in Central Ohio while providing quality educa onal services for students. The district has carefully monitored current bond debt and refunded exis ng bonds to achieve maximum savings for taxpayers. Due to these eff orts, the proposed bond issue would cost a homeowner $62/year (or $5/month) for each $100,000 of home valua on. By law, all of the money is dedicated to facili es and classroom furnishings and cannot be used for salaries or administra on.
