INTRODUCTION

In this modern era of advancement in the field of

sophisticated technologies, diseases due to sedentary

lifestyle are also increasing, one among such is Sthoulya,

which is leading now a days in society.

“Obesity” specifically refers to an excessive amount of

body fat.

“Overweight” refers to an excessive amount of body

weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water.

WHO estimates show that, 700 million

adults will be obese by 2015.

2.5 million deaths are attributed to overweight and

obesity throughout the world.

In India, 15.2% of females and 16.8% of males are

overweight in 15 – 49 years of age. In urban India it

further increases.

New technologies have greatly reduced the amount of physical

activity.

OBESITY

Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that mayimpair health (WHO)

Heaviness and bulkiness of the body due toextensive growth especially in udaradi region(Bhava Prakasha)

Ati sthula : Who on account of the inordinateincrease of fat and flesh, is disfigured withpendulous buttocks, belly and breasts and whoseincrease bulk is not matched by a correspondingincrease in energy (ca su 21/8-9)

The implementation of guru atarpana is possible by 2 methods,

The approach is to consume guru ahara which does not

produce high amount of energy and not increase the agni

further but to satisfy the satiety center.

By the use of drugs which are by prakruti itself have guru

guna but acts as atarpana/karshana like that of Yava.

Making laghu atarpana dravyas to guru atarpana by samskara

or guru santarpana dravyaa to guru atarpana by means of

samskara.

PREVENTIVE ASPECTS

Prevention is better than cure is more ideal. Prevention

should begin in early childhood. Obesity is harder to treat in

adult than it is in children

Prevention is achieved by satwavachaya chikitsa, balanced

Ahara, vyayama, samajagarana swapna, nidanaparivarjana

Adopt the safe, long and sustained weight reduction

methods.

CONLUSION

Rapid weight loss may please, but it does not help in the

longer run and end up with severe complications.

Alternative therapies have a different approach and lay

emphasis on natural procedures

Ayurvedic principles of life style , diets and Yoga for

natural weight loss, since it is believed that they maintain

vitality as well.
