• The JJB Stadium was the first place in the UK to boast a Premiership football side and a Super League rugby club

• Famous Wigan food products include Heinz Baked Beans, Pataks Indian Foods, Potters Herbal Remedies and Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls

• Wiganers are sometimes known as “Pie Eaters” but contrary to popular myth, this has nothing to do with their love for pies! It actually dates back to the miners strike in the 1920’s, when Wigan Miners were forced back to work before the strike was over. As a result, they were said to have eaten “humble pie”!

• Several actors from Wigan have starred in the ever popular soap, Coronation Street. Fans will remember Georgia Taylor (Toyah Battersby), Eva Pope (barmaid Tanya Pooley), Jennifer James (Gina Gregory) and Kim Marsh (Michelle Connor) formerly of pop band, Hearsay.

• Marks & Spencer was born in Wigan when Michael Marks joined forces with Thomas Spencer in 1894. For three years, the town was the firm’s headquarters.

• In the 1990’s, the Verve became Wigan’s most famous musical export since George Formby.
