Early Greek Governments

There are four different types of Greek governments: Monarchies, Oligarchies, tyrannies and Democracies.

Monarchies

• Monarchies Were led by an all-powerful king.

• The king Was succeeded by his first born son.

• Kings Had a "right" to rule. They seized power in rough times but were born to do so.

Oligarchies

• Oligarchies were led by groups of aristocrats.

• because Oligarchies were lead by the high class aristocrats, less-fortunate citizens tended to not have much of a say in things such as laws.

Tyrannies• This type of government formed after an oligarchies.

• When a single aristocrat seized power from all others and crowned himself king, a tyrannical government was formed.

• Tyrannies were the least democratic government: only one person had a say in how the government was run.

• Fun Fact: Tyrannosaurus Rex translates to "tyrant king" in Latin

Democracies• Ancient greek democracy was the fairest government at the time-it allowed citizens to have a say in the government.

• While a democracy was the fairest form of government, it still placed voting restrictions on women and allowed slavery.

City States

• Greek City-states were very independent. Each one had their own separate government.

• Each City-State had their own requirements which determined government.

City States In Greece:

• Athens• Sparta• Troy• Corinth• Thebes• Olympia• Delphi• Mycenae • Argos

Sparta• Sparta was Located in the southern part of

Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula.• Sparta was well known for its great

military strength.• The city-state was Ruled by two kings and

an oligarchy.

Athens• Unlike Sparta, Athens was more of an

intellectual and artistic city-state; not as military based.

• Ancient Athenians were thoughtful people. They studied science, philosophy, and history.

• Athens was governed by a Democracy.

Thebes• This is where Antigone takes place.• Many other famous Greek plays also

taKE PLace in this city-state.• Like Sparta, Thebes also had a strong

military.• This city-state was ruled by an

Oligarchy.
