In this session we’ll• Become familiar with learning styles• Become familiar with ways Credenda’s online

courses work with all learning styles• Examine Credenda’s certificate and diploma

courses for school paraprofessional staff

You’d like professional training, but…

• You have a job• There aren’t any training programs nearby• You feel you’d learn more in a class with an

instructor and other students than by correspondence courses

Learn with Credenda• Attend classes from anywhere in the world • Weekly classes with your instructor and

classmates• One night per week per course• All courses are 8 weeks long• No textbooks required—all content is online• Train with technology

Online Learning and You• Worried that you’ll find online learning

difficult?

Which of these describes you? • Visual learner• Auditory learner• Kinesthetic learner

Why does learning style matter?• Each style involves a different part of the brain• The more parts of the brain involved in

learning, the more we learn or remember, and the easier learning becomes

Each learning style uses a different part of the brain…

• Visual• Logical• Aural• Verbal• Physical• Social• Solitary

Now, which styles describe you?

Let’s start with social v.s. solitary

You do both with Credenda! Social

• Discuss topics using your microphone in E-Live class

• Collaborate with peers in break-out rooms in E-Live

• Use discussion boards for asynchronous interaction

• Do group projects using various tools

Solitary

• Access content in Desire 2 Learn (replaces textbooks)

• View recordings of missed classes or to review concepts

• Complete assignments

Let’s look at visual learning styles

Powerpoint in E-Live classes• E-Live allows you to view your instructor’s

Powerpoint the same as a face-2-face class

Share/discuss Web tours in E-Live

Watch/discuss videos/multimedia

Aural Learners

Aural learners can listen to…• An instructor (synchronous or asynchronous)• Classmates’ views/ideas• Videos or sound recordings of content• Discussions in whole group or small group

situations• Recordings of missed classes or classes that

have content they want to review

Physical Learners

“Do” things in class• E-Live allows you to share your computer

desktop with your classmates and instructor, so your instructor is looking “over your shoulder” and guiding you through a process

• Let’s take a look at the recording for a class learning to use Microsoft Publisher to create a newsletter

Interact with Content • Do interactive online quizzes with immediate

feedback from instructor/web

Whiteboard Activities

Use Multimedia/Conduct research

Logical Learning Styles

Sometimes also called a mathematical learningstyle

Logical Layout of Learning Materials in D2L

• Content/assignments are laid out in structured/organized Web pages in D2L

In-class Activities• Ask questions – get immediate feedback• Discuss concepts – identify flaws in reasoning

presented by Web content and/or classmates• Set personal goals for achieving learning

outcomes presented for each concept• Many courses have a self-evaluation

component providing you with questions to help you evaluate your progress logically

Verbal learners

You can…• Ask questions in class• Participate in verbal assessments such as

presentations• Explain a process step-by-step while you share

your computer desktop • Discuss and interact in small break-out groups

with classmates• Get help by telephone from your instructor

Now for the best part!Online learning allows you to link all of these things into a single learning experience!

The following exercise included:* Visual * Aural * Physical* Verbal * Logical * Social (or solitary by reviewing the recording alone)
