Regional Fight Back Implementation Team
• Led by Community Mission Manager
and Regional RFL Point of Contact
• Include:
– Regional Director of Advocacy
– Regional Patient and Family Service Staff
– Legislative Ambassador
– Experienced Fight Back Chair
– Other key volunteers (i.e., Advisory Board member involved in Relay)
Regional Fight Back Implementation Team
• Develop a Regional Fight Back Plan that takes into account the Division Fight Back Plan priority strategies for the region
• Regional Plan is a guide for each Relay FB Plan
• Each region’s plan should consider how to build activities and messages into:– pre-event gatherings (regional summits,
kickoffs, committee and TC meetings) – fundraisers – email and other communication – day-of-activities
Regional Fight Back Implementation Team
• The Regional Implementation Team should train and support the RFL Directors and Fight Back Chairs to incorporate these strategies into each event
• Recommend:– 1 Regional training for Relay staff– 1 regional training with all Relay
Fight Back Chairs and staff partners
Roles of Event LevelFight Back Volunteers
• Fight Back Chair• Oversees creation and overall
implementation of the Fight Back Plan for the Relay
• Focuses on Prevention/Detection and Research
• Advocacy Chair – Advocacy Activities
• Survivor Chair – Survivorship activities
Fight Back Plan
• Each Relay should choose at least one activity from each category (for a minimum of four Fight Back Activities)

– Survivorship– Research– Advocacy
Prevention and Detection
• Colorectal Cancer Awareness Zone
• Tobacco Free Awareness Zone
• Tobacco Free Supermarket and Pharmacies
• Healthy Relays
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Zone
• Colon Cancer Awareness Zone is a fun campaign to raise awareness and to collect screening pledges for colon cancer.
– Pledge Cards – have all committee members, team captains and participants sign the Colon Cancer Pledge card.
– Announcements - Make announcements about the importance of colon cancer screening
– Colon Cancer Screening Lap – Honor anyone who is current with their screening according to the guidelines.
Tobacco Free Awareness ZoneThe Tobacco Free Awareness Zone
is defined as a Relay with at least the first three activities:
• Signs - “Relay For Life is Tobacco Free” signs at all entrances
• Announcements • Tear sheets • Quitters lap• Quit table
Tobacco Free Supermarket and Pharmacies
• The more tobacco retailers there are in a community the more likely children will start smoking
• An ongoing campaign to reduce advertising and tobacco retailers
• Postcards / Petitions• Sample letters and emails• A website with chains’ email -www.tobaccofreegrocery.org
Healthy Relays
• Events should support our Nutrition Guidelines
• See RFL Nutrition Guide• Use at least 3 new
ideas from Guide– Grilled chicken vs
hot dogs and other processed meats
– Ground turkey vs red meat
– Water or seltzer vs regular soda
• Post calories next to menu at one or more vendors
• Tell Relayers why we are making changes
