A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:
This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn about the first
Americans to live in our community. This lesson uses the 2nd grade Houghton Mifflin Social
Studies textbook “Neighborhoods”. (Pg. 212-217)
B. Target Population:
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Skill Level: students at all learning levels
Grouping: whole group reading & discussions, independent for activity and assessment
C. Materials:
Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resources pg. 65)- 24 copies
Reteach Mini lesson (graphic organizer 8 pg. 217)
Houghton Mifflin 2nd grade social studies book: Neighborhoods (p. 212-217) Paper and pencils
D. Objectives:
o NV State Social Studies Standards
H1.2.4 Recognize similarities and differences of earlier generations in
areas such as work, dress, manners, stories, games, and festivals.
o Student-Friendly Standards
H1.2.4 I can recognize similarities and differences of people that used tolive in our community before us.
E. Procedure:
1. Refer to notes on TE 212- “Get Set to Read.”
Explain the Study Guide students will complete as we read.
Call students attention to the map on pg. 213
Identify & discuss the four first American groups.
Introduce vocabulary (history)
2. As a class, read pg. 212-215, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of TE
(pg. 213, 214, 215)
3. Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we read;
they can continue working on their Study Guide when we finish reading.
4. DDD Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for
understanding.

5. Discuss with your group- How are the Navajo sandals and the Osage bowl similar? How
are they different? (TE 216)
6. CLOSURE: Discuss the two statements in the “Review and Assess” section TE 216
F. Assessment:
What will you use to measure student understanding?
Complete Reading Skill: Classify independently. This will allow me to measure studentsunderstanding between the different first four different groups of Americans.
Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.
Students should have completed the worksheet with the classification of the different
types of groups. Filling out the worksheet with the different groups of Americans will
show if students understand the similarities and differences between the four groups.
G. Reflection:
1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?
I think the easiest part to teach will be identifying the similarities between the four
groups.
2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?
I think the most challenging part to teach will be building on background
knowledge, as some students may not recall learning about the past/history before
or they may have a different concept about it.
3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?
As an extension to the lesson, I would use “Extend Lesson 1 (pg. 218-219)- “TheYoung Woman and the Thunder Beings.”
4. What will you do for students who don’t grasp the concepts?
For the students that who don’t grasp the concepts, I would use the Reteach Mini
lesson on pg. 217. It’s a Venn diagram that focuses on two groups that can be
modified to different groups.
5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I think this lesson can be modified by having books, magazines about the four
different groups, so students can explore the images and become more familiar
with them. This can also lead to an extension of a lesson plan.
6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?
The most difficult part of this lesson plan was planning what worksheets to use first.
The order that I chose, I think it was the best.
