› offer research opportunities;

› provide drill and practice;

› make abstract concepts visible to students who may be discouraged by traditional learning material.

› Tutorial, instructional and problem solving games, all serve their purpose in stimulating the minds of children.

» Cons› Students may become distracted by other activities.

› Teachers' first technology projects generate excitement, but often little content learning.

› It often takes a few years until teachers can use technology effectively in core subject areas.

› It makes a lot of information available.

› Students have access to teaching programs and games.

› Distance-learning has been greatly improved.

› Thanks to social media sites, email, texting, tweeting and such, students can be connected to their peers and to their teachers rather readily.

» Cons› A lot of information is available, but not all of it is quality information.

› Students do not dig beyond the first article they find.

› Students choose the Internet over traditional learning material in all cases.

» Pros› CD-ROMs provide vocabulary and grammar practice.

› They are listening and reading materials for learners.

› DVDs often offer an option to show or hide subtitles.

› Both provide authentic material which motivates students.

» Cons› CD-ROMs are less effective for speaking practice.

› For writing practice it tends to be limited to activities such as ‘fill in the blanks’, or reordering sentences.

› DVDs featuring interactive exercises need a computer.
