Edvard Munch

(1863 - 1944)

Edvard Munch was born in Norway to a not very wealthy family.

Although his family could see his talent, they didn’t want him to be an artist.

Munch went to school to be an engineer to try and make his family happy. He was so unhappy

he dropped out of school to become an artist.

He painted his world around him.

As a young boy, Edvard lost both his mother and his favorite sister to illness.

This painting, called Spring is based on his sister.

No one liked the painting, especially not his family.

Many of his paintings are mysterious and slightly scary.

The Scream is Munch’s most famous painting.

Edvard Munch created several versions of The Scream.

The Scream has been stolen several times.

The title in Norwegian is, Skrik.

Munch was not very well known or liked as an artist until he was very old.

He lived alone with just his dogs.

When he died he left all of his art to the city of Oslo. The city built a museum so that people all

over the world could see his amazing art.
