A STORY ABOUT FORKS

ThetableforkwasintroducedtoEuropeintheeleventhcenturywhentheDogeofVenice,DomenicoSilvio,marriedaprincessfromByzantium.ThisByzantineprincessbroughtacaseoftwotableforkstoVeniceaspartofherluggage.Theprincessshockedthecourtandthechurchmenbyrefusingtoeatwithherhands.“Godinhiswisdomhasprovidedmanwithnaturalforks–hisfingers.ThereforeitisaninsulttoHimtoreplacethemwithartificialmetallicforkswheneating,”wroteoneofthechurchmen.

Bythebeginningofthe17thcentury,theforkwasalreadyknowninEngland,althoughitwasrareandviewedasanItalianinfluenceandfantasyofhighersociety,whileinItalyeventhemerchantclasseswereusingforksregularly.

In1608anEnglishmanwhosenamewasThomasCoryatevisitedItaly.He likedthecountryandnoteddowneveryinterestingthinghefound.Buttherewasonethingwhichhefoundmoreinterestingthantheothers.InhisdiaryThomaswrote,“WhentheItalianseatmeat,theyusesmallmetalforks.Theydonoteatwithhandsbecause,astheysay,peopledonotalwayshavecleanhands.”

BeforeleavingforEngland,ThomasCoryateboughtafewforks.AthomeThomasgaveadinnerpartytoshowtheinventiontohisfriends.Whentheservantsbroughtthesteak,hetookoutaforkandbegantoeatliketheydidinItaly.Everybodylookedathiminsurprise.Whenhetoldhisfriendswhatitwas,theyallwantedtotakeagoodlookatthestrangething.AllhisfriendssaidthattheItalianscertainlywerecrazypeoplebecausetheforklookedveryinconvenient.ThomasCoryatetriedtoprovetheopposite.Hesaiditwasnotnicetoeatmeatwithone’sfingersbecausetheywerenotalwaysclean.Everybodygotangryatthat.DidMrCoryatethinkthatpeopleinEnglandalwayshaddirtyhands?Andweren’tthetenfingerswehadenoughforus?ThomasCoryatewantedtoshowthatitwasveryeasytousethefork.Butthefirstpieceofmeathetookwiththeforkfelltothefloor.Hisfriendsbegantolaughandhehadtotaketheforkaway.

Onlyfiftyyears laterdidpeople inEnglandbegin touse forks.Throughout thenext twohundredyears, thetableforkspreadallaroundEuropeandintothelowersocialclasses.

1.ThetableforkwasfirstintroducedtoEuropebecauseAtheDogeofVenicedidn’twanttoeatwithhisfingers.Bthechurchmendidn’tallowtheDogeofVenicetoeatwithhisfingers.CtheDogeofVenicemarriedaByzantineprincess.DtheDogeofVenicebelievedthattheByzantineprincessrefusedtoeat.

2.WhentheprincessstartedeatingwiththeforkthereactionofsocietywasAnatural.Bneutral.Cnegative.Dpositive.

Task 2 (10 points)Read the text and then decide whether each statement is, according to the text, true (T), false (F) or not mentioned (NM). Tick () the appropriate box. An example (0) has been given.

NO RECIPE FOR A STAR

Now and again an artist or a group appears on themarket, and suddenly everyone istalkingaboutthewayrecordcompaniesmakestars, but itseldomreallyhappensthatway.Atleast,thatistheopinionofMichaelDowson,40,arecordcompanymanagerwithover15yearsofexperience.“Peopleimaginethatnowadaysyoucanjustputallthefactsintoacomputerandittellsyouexactlywhatastarshouldbelike.Butit’snotthateasy.Starsdon’tcomeoutofahitfactory.”

Recordcompaniesareinthebusinessofmarketingaproduct.Buttheirproductsaretheartists,andmarketingstrategies thatworkwhensellingcoffeearenoteffectiveon the recordmarket.Peoplearenotbuyingabrandnamebuttheperformersandtherecords.

Howdotherecordcompaniespromotetheirproducts?Thefirststepis lettingthepublicknowthatarecordexists.RadioandTVarethemostimportantareashere–appearancesonmusicprogrammeshelpsales,buteventheyarenoguaranteeofsuccess.SorecordcompaniessendallnewrecordstotheradiostationsandtheradioDJs.Theyalsohaverepresentativeswhocallonthestationsandsay,“Look,thisisagreatnewrecord.Youshouldlistentoit.”

Nowadays,TVstationsusea lotofvideos in theirmusicprogrammes.Theproblem forrecordcompaniesisthatthesearesoexpensive.Forworldfamousstars,acompanywillpayaround$200,000foragoodvideo–butmostperformersarenotthatfamous,andthereisnopointinmakingavideothatcostsmorethantherecordwillmake.

Thatisnotthewholestory,though.Musicislikefashion,andfashionschangefromseasontoseason,fromyeartoyear.Artistsnotonlyhavetoproducegoodmusic,buttherightmusicattherighttime.Exactlywhatisgoingtobe“in”andwhen,isalmostimpossibletosay.

Thefinalproblemispersuadingrecorddealerstobuyarecord.Thedealerscannotaffordtobuyallthenewrecordsonthemarket,sootherfactorshelp.Therepresentativesmaysay,“ThisperformerisgoingtobeonTVandradio4timesinthenext6weeks,”or,“thisrecordisNo.10intheUnitedStates.”Thenthedealerwillperhapsbuytherecord.

Itisalonganddifficultroadfromthefirstdemonstrationrecordsenttoarecordcompanytoahitrecord.Therecordcompanymanagersays,“Alotofmoneymaybeabletoguaranteetheproductionofasuccessfulcarorstereosystem,butthereisnorecipeforsuccessintherecordbusiness.IfIdidknowexactlywhatmakesahit,I’dbeamultimillionairetoday.”

T F NM0. Names of new artists and groups appear on the market quite often.

1.Lotsofpeoplebelievethatrecordcompaniesmakestars.

2.MichaelDowsonhasalwaysproducedbigstars.

3.Marketingastaristhesameasmarketinganyotherproduct.

4.RadioandTVarethebestwaystostartpromotingarecord.

5.Arecordoftenheardontheradioiscertaintobeahit.

6.RecordcompaniestrytoinfluenceradiodiscjockeysandTVproducers.

7.Videosoftencosttoomuchforrecordcompaniestomake.

8.Fashionsinmusicplayabigpartinanartist'ssuccess.

9.Therecordcompaniesarenotinterestedintherecorddealers.

10.Peoplewiththerightexperienceintherecordbusinesscanmakeanysongahit.
