ELECTROMAGNETIC GEAR SHIFTER

INTRODUTION Everyone is talking about modern vehicles

with automatic gears and gear shifters today, but it is out of the reach for most of us.

What makes this utility so expensive????? Can it be made accessible to the common

man????? Can the traditional manual gear shifters be

modified effectively to Automatic????? We believe it is possible, And we’ll

demonstrate it now!

OBJECTIVES1) To create a effective and viable design for

an modern gear shifting mechanism.2) To create a innovative and reliable design3) To make it as ergonomic as possible.4) To achieve a cost effective and easily

marketable product.

SCOPE, MERITS AND USES Can easily replace all conventional gear

shifting mechanism with slight modifications It can achieve reliable and instantaneous

shifting of gears. It is simpler and cheaper than hydraulic or

mechanical actuating mechanisms. Can be easily adapted to any applications. Can be used in all kinds of vehicles

BASIC PRINCIPLE A gear box consists of a set of meshing gear

pairs which transmits motion from the prime mover to the driven element (eg. An engine to the tires of a car ).

It can do so with variable speed and torque by changing the active gear pairs which are meshed together.

Shifting from one gear pair to another is achieved by a mechanism which can be atuated by a number of ways.

We will actuate the mechanism using electromagnetic forces, thus creating an electrically operated gearbox.

WHY AN ELECTRICAL MECHANISM Using an electromagnetic actuation

mechanism makes the system very reliable as it reduces the no. of moving parts.

The actuation time is drastically reduced thus the lag in between shifting between two gears is also reduced giving precise and easily operable gear shifting.

The electrical circuits and the electromagnetic mechanism is cheaper, more reliable and simpler than conventional mechanisms(eg. Hydraulic, Lever, or linkage system)

WHAT WE ARE DOING We created a concept design for an

electromagnetically actuated gear box. We made a working model for our concept

design. We proved that we can operate a functional

gear box through our design We created a very user friendly, simple and

reliable gear shifting control system. We tested it for efficiency and performance.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE ELECTROMAGNET

•We know that when a current is passed through a conductor a magnetic field is set up around the conductor.

•If a sufficient amount of current can be passed through the conductor it can be used to induce magnetism in a metallic object.

•Thus we can create very strong magnets using the above principle

CHALLENGES WE MAY FACE1. Designing a functional gear box or variable

speed and torque.2. Designing a actuation mechanism for the

gear box.3. Creating a live working model.4. Choosing the right type of gears.5. Constructing an electromagnet with

sufficient power.6. Designing the electrical circuits for

operating the mechanism.

WHAT WE WILL ACHIEVE We obtained a rich experience and

knowledge of the working and construction of a gear box.

We created our own gear box with variable speed and torque capabilities.

We actuated it using basic scientific and engineering principles

We successfully demonstrated our concept for an automatic gear shifting mechanism through a working model.

FUTURE SCOPE We believe that this is only the beginning of

many more innovative ideas for replacing traditional actuation systems.

These gear shifting mechanisms can be employed in any vehicle.

It has the potential to become a standard feature in all kinds of vehicles at an affordable price for all sorts of customers.

The actuation system can be employed in other applications as well.
