INTRODUCTION With the recent enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the ever-evolving US health care system, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) policy is an integral part of understanding how psychological services are billed and reimbursed. Education of professionals is integral for effective navigation of policy changes. What is CPT? • A coding system developed by AMA in
conjunction with CMS to describe professional health services.
• Each code has a specific five digit number and description as well as a reimbursable value.
• Various “physicians” or “qualified health professional” perform services requiring the use of CPT codes.
Why is it important for Psychologists? • A new health care plan recently passed by
congress will change health care (largest change in 25-50 years).
• An entirely new diagnostic system will be in place in two years.
• Medicaid started using medicare NCCI edits effective 04.01.11.
• Psychologist use these codes for billing and reimbursement of professional services
• Improper use may result in audits.
PsychologyCoding.com • Created by Antonio E. Puente, Ph.D. to help
inform professionals ² First psychologist on the AMA CPT
(HCPAC) committee and third non-MD in its 50-year history. On the actual 17 member voting panel.
