ELEMENTAL SUPERHEROES!!!
Introduction: Congratulations! Marvel Movie Studios has just hired you to create and direct its brand-new superhero summer blockbuster movie. Only one problem…they don’t have the new superhero yet. So, it falls on your shoulders to create the superhero. Mission: Your job will be to use the Periodic Table of Elements to research an element, and then use the properties of the element to create a superhero. Process:
1. Select an element from the Periodic Table of Elements for your character. 2. Decide whether your character will be a superhero or a villain. 3. Research the physical and chemical properties and other information for
your element. 4. Decide on the product you will present to the movie producer (Superhero
Creator, Drawing, 3D Model, etc.) 5. Written Summary of your superhero’s powers, and the powers correspond
to the properties of the chosen element. My Chosen Element: DUE DATE:
Name:___________________________ Period:________ ES Unit 2 – project rubric – Periodic Table Project Components: ___ Background Information Graphic Organizer ___ Superhero Creator Graphic Organizer ___ Image, Picture, Drawing or Model of Atom ___ Written Summary of Superhero ___ Image, Picture, Drawing or Model of Superhero/Villain Outcome: CONCLUDE: Classify elements and describe their properties and periodic trends. (THE PERIODIC TABLE) Project Rubric: ES __ I have created a superhero based on 9 or more characteristics of my element. (some of which were not discussed in class yet, or ever!) Characteristics may include:
• # of Protons, Neutrons or Electrons • Phase Changes (Freezing Pts., Boiling Pts.) • pH Levels • Uses by Humans
__ I have demonstrated my strong understanding of atoms by using a variety of science vocabulary in my project __ I have provided footnotes that explain the connection between my element and my character __ My project has a clean and neat appearance, is thoughtfully organized and contains substantial effort and content Comments:

combines with Potassium and
Sodium
Humans need Iodine for nutrition
Iodine deficiency affects about two billion people
Leading preventable cause of intellectual
disabilities
Involved in Production of Acetic Acid (A distinct odor;;
Vinegar)
X-Rays
Sanitation Systems
Kills bacteria and germs
Animal Feed
Dyes
Photography
Used in the Thyroid Gland
Controls body’s growth rate
Too little Iodine = stunted growth and cognitive
ability
Interesting Information
Pure Iodine can be very dangerous
Can cause skin burning and eye burning
Many people get the iodine they need from eating seaweed
Foods rich in iodine include fish, dairy products, some fruits and vegetables, and in
iodized salt
Pregnant women need more iodine than the average person. They get this through
dietary supplements.
Too much iodine can make some sick
Superhero: Iodionium
Alias: Bernard Courtois1
Born: July 4, 20532
Birthplace: Mediterranean Sea (Near the coast of France)3 4
Symbol:
Superpowers:
Able to grow and shrink at will5
Able to see through solid objects6
Able to withstand very high temperatures7
Produces chemicals that burn the skin of enemies8
Able to change color to camouflage with surroundings9
Weaknesses:
Very cold temperatures10
Too much time on land (Needs to be in salty water to stay healthy)11
When changing size multiple times, Iodionium will become weaker12
