Garden Harvest

Last week’s harvest included lettuce, rad-ishes, spinach, kohl-rabi, cabbage, and herbs. The onions planted in January are doubling their size. The potatoes planted two weeks ago are poking

sprouts up and out of the soil.

The tomatoes, onions, and potatoes are do-ing very well and growing fast! Beans, cucumbers, squash, peppers and egg plant have been planted. Now it is a weekly chore to make sure they get lots of good organic fertilizer, pests are controlled, and weeds are re-

moved. In class, Mr. McMullen will discuss “Good Guys and Bad Guys” and Mrs. Op-perman will discuss “Pest Patrol”. Each class has only four more scheduled gar-dening classes before the end of the year. We will be gardening with Mrs. Krenek’s two classes this week.

5th Grade Garden

Harvest

Two of the last

three weeks have had students miss-ing gardening, first

due to Spring Break and last week, due to testing. The vol-

unteers did pick all the produce last

week and sent it in-

side for distribution to the students. The spring crops are

coming to an end but lots of lettuce, broccoli, collards,

radishes and herbs were harvested.

The students, nature club, and volunteers have been transform-ing the orchard. In addition to about a dozen fruit and nut trees there are also several vegetable beds and a number of bird and animal feeding stations there. The Chimney Swift Tower had its

first residents last year and we hope to see more this year. There are now two Purple Martin houses and several composting areas.
