GrammarForms of inversion:

Ex: HARDLY HAD I WOKEN UP WHEN THE PHONE RANG

• When the verb is used in a form with an auxiliary, the structure is adverbial + auxiliary + main verb.

More Grammar

• When the verb is used in a form with more than one auxiliary, the structure is: adverbial + first auxiliary + subject + other auxiliaries + main verb.

Ex: NEVER HAVE I BEEN WITNESS TO SO MANY COWS IN ONE FIELD BEFORE.

Even More Grammar• With present/past simple, the structure is

adverbial + do/did + subject + main verb.

Ex: NEVER DID I THINK I’D WANT TO BE HERE AGAIN.

• With the simple form of be, the main verb is placed before the subject.

Ex: FIERCELY WAS HIS HONOUR DEFENDED.
