WEEK OF NOVEMBER 18, 2009
Church Family And Friends,
There are several big things happening that I want to share with you.
First, Home For Christmas is a celebration of Christ and His work through the body of
believers at First Baptist Lyman. Over the years so many wonderful people served the Lord
through the ministries of this church, laying a foundation for present and future growth.
Many of those saints have gone to live with the Lord Jesus, some remain active in our
congregation, while others are homebound, in assisted living, or caring for someone who is.
Home for Christmas is designed to bring these precious church members home to their
church for a special worship service on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 10:30 AM. We will
be organizing our Sunday School classes to provide transportation for those who are able to
be a part of the service. If you have questions or would like to be Home For Christmas,
please call the church office, (864) 439-8721.
Secondly, First Joy is a quarterly gathering on a Sunday night to worship the Lord through
music, fellowship, and agreeing together as the body of Christ concerning the affairs of our
local church body. Our next First Joy will be November 29, 2009. We will begin with a
“Blue Jeans and Chili” fellowship in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 PM. Then we’ll make our
way to the sanctuary for our time of worship from 6:10 - 7:00 PM. We have two major
items to approve: first, the 2010 Ministry Plan being recommended by our Budget and
Finance Team; secondly, three amendments to the church by-laws, recommended by the
Constitution and By-Laws Team. I hope you’ll be in prayer for our time together and join us
for First Joy!
We have wrapped up our Sunday morning study of Creation in Genesis 1 - 2. This week
we’ll begin looking at the Fall of Man and the Flood. I hope you’ll join us as we study God’s
Word!
It is a joy to serve this wonderful church family!

“Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; It is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.” - Psalm 33:1-3 “Sing to the Lord, you saints of his; praise his holy name.” - Psalm 30:4 “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - Eph. 5:19-20 These are just a few examples in scripture where we are challenged to sing and make music to the Lord. We were created to worship him, and he has ordained praise from our lips. God inhabits the praise of his people! Music is one of the many ways God has given us to praise him. We can use pianos, organs, guitars, trumpets, and every kind of instrument imaginable to the glory of God. But there is one instrument that stands out from the rest - our voices. God has given you a voice that is uniquely yours! Now it’s true that to our ears, some sound better than others, and not everyone needs to stand up and sing a solo, for sure! But God has given you a voice that only you can choose to use, and I believe that scripture plainly teaches that God wants to hear it. There is nothing more beautiful than God’s people standing together and lifting their voices up to him in praise. Don’t be afraid to sing to the Lord! You don’t have to sing loud, as no one has to hear it but you and God. Just try it, and see the blessing you receive when you praise him!
We had an incredible weekend at Awanita! Thank you so much for praying with and for us. God did some
amazing things in our hearts that weekend, and we grew
closer together as a group. I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the adult leaders who helped out
for the weekend. Allison Walker did an awesome job decorating for us and helping to lead the girls. Tollie Gosnell graciously
took an afternoon off from work to help us haul stuff up to the camp
and set up before the students arrived. Hayley Smith worked like a madwoman leading up to the retreat and during the retreat - we are so
blessed to have such an awesome intern!! Ryan Chavous, Jonathan
Vick, and Amanda Young also did an awesome job leading our students for the weekend. And Brian Dailey did an incredible job leading us in
worship. And I can’t forget my shadowers! Hailey Mitchem and Jessica
Link made a HUGE sacrifice (ah- hem) and took a day off from school AND got academic credit (how did this work anyway???) for helping us
set up that Friday. Apparently, learning what a youth minister does is quite the scholarly experience! We had an incredible weekend, and it
was all because of all the wonderful servants we have in the Student
Ministry—they did such an incredible job, and I am so thankful for each of them! God bless you guys!!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOXES It’s time to stuff shoeboxes again!
Special “collection day” on Sunday, November 22
We will have everyone bring their filled shoeboxes to the front of the church to have a time of prayer over them. It is such a joy to
see what God can do in the lives of these children through a simple gift!
For your convenience, plastic shoeboxes will be available in each adult Sunday School class starting this Sunday. Please bring a $1 donation for each box you take to help cover the cost of the shoeboxes. The plastic boxes are as much a gift to the children as the items inside
because it gives them a place to keep their treasures safe and dry!
