Endangered Species Act of 1973
• First act passed in 1966
• Bill signed by President Nixon on December 28, 1973
• Amendment years: 1973, 1982, 1985, 1988
• National
Function: The act was designed to protect any species that are deemed at risk from extinction as well as the “ecosystems upon which they depend” as long as they are listed by the Federal government as “endangered “ or “threatened.”

• Agencies responsible for Regulation and Enforcement: -National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) -United States Fish and Wildlife Service
(FWS).
• Environmental Issues affected:
- The destruction of any species’ habitat- Overutilization of species for any commercial, scientific, recreational or educational purposes- Inadequacy of existing protection- Natural or manmade factors that affect the continued existence of the species
