CourseDescription:Despitethefactthatoceansarenotonlythelargestbutalsosomeofthemostimperiledenvironmentsontheplanet,theoceanhasgenerallybeenneglectedbyenvironmentalmovements,environmentaltheorists,andscholarsofanimalstudies.Whilethereareagreatmanyworksofliteratureabouttheocean,itiscrucialtostudyvisualrepresentationsofmarineenvironmentsandseacreaturessincevisualmediahavehadapowerfulimpactonhowweunderstandtheocean.Thiscoursewillintroducetheliterature,film,andscholarshipabouttheocean,askinghowthefocusonblue,ratherthangreen,shiftspredominantapproachesinenvironmentalcriticism,environmentaltheory,andanimalstudies.Wewillreadfiction,sciencefiction,poetry,theory,history,andnonfictionenvironmentalwriting,includingworksbyJulesVerne,RachelCarson,SylviaEarle,SamuelColeridge,HermanMelville,LindaHogan,JoanSlonczewski,StefanHelmreich,andothers.Wewilldiscussseveralfilms,includingJaws,Sharkwater,TheCove,WhaleRider,thefilmsofJeanPainleve,andexcerptsfromBluePlanet.Wewillalsolookatthevisualmediaincludedonscientificandactivistwebsites,someoftheearlydrawingsofoceancreaturesbyHaeckelandAgassiz,andrecent“coffeetable”photographybooks,asweanalyzethemeaningandimplicationsofmarineaesthetics.[Nopreviousknowledgeofoceansorenvironmentalcriticismisrequired,butstudentsshouldhavealreadytakenEnglish5300oritsequivalent.]

CourseRequirementsParticipation,twopresentations:15%Weeklypapers:25%Seminarpaper(includingpresentationofseminarpaper):60%AttendanceattwoHermannstalksoroneHermannsgraduateworkshop.Youmustcompletealltherequiredworkinordertoobtaincreditforthecourse.Eightshortresponsepapers(3double‐spacedtyped,stapledpages)willberequired.Thesewillbedueatthebeginningofclasseachweek(startingwithweektwo)andwillbehandedinagain,gatheredtogetherinafolder,atthefinalclassperiod.Thesepapersarenotmeanttobefullyfleshedoutargumentsoranalyses.Instead,thesepapersshouldcompareandcontrastthereadingsfortheweek,remarkuponthemostsignificantideas,evaluatethemeritsandlimitationsofparticularargumentsandtheoreticalframeworks,andraisesignificantandprovocativequestions.Theresponsepaperswillreceiveimmediatecommentsbutnotgrades;thesepaperswillbegradedinaportfoliomanner,alongwithyourpresentationandparticipation,attheendofthecourse.(IfthepapersareC,D,orFpapers,theywillreceivethosegrades,however.)Two15‐minutepresentations,whichyouwillsignupfor,willalsoberequired.(Awrittenversionofyourpresentationcanbehandedinasthatweek’srequiredpaper.)OneofthesepresentationswillbeanAnalysis/InterpretationoftheassignedreadingandonewillbeaSummary/Analysisofeitheroneofthe“seealso”texts,“additionalreadings,”oranothertextrelevanttothatweek’sdiscussion.One25‐pageseminarpaperandanoralpresentationofanabstractofthatpaperwillbeduethefinalclassperiod.Thesepapersshoulddemonstrateanunderstandingandengagementwiththeoreticalissueswehavediscussedinthecourse.Thepapermustincludeaone‐pageabstract.Ph.D.studentswillalsoberequiredtoattachafinalpageexplaininghowtheywouldrevisethepaperforpublicationandlistingfivejournalstowhichtheywouldsubmitthepaper.Theyshouldalsolistconferencesandpaneltopicsthatwouldbeagoodfitforthispaper.(Ideally,thepaperwillbepresentedataconferenceandthenberevisedforpublication.)Mechanics:Allpapersmustbe“typed,”stapled,andhaveasignificanttitle.PleasedoNOTuseplasticfoldersorpaperclipsforyourpaper—astapleissufficient.Allpapersaredueattheverybeginningoftheclass.Ineveracceptfaxedpapersoremailedpapers.Besuretokeepanextracopyofyourpaper.PleaseNote:plagiarismisaseriousoffenseandwillbepunishedtothefullextent.Participation/AttendanceYouractive,informedparticipationiscrucialtothesuccessofthecourse.Carefullyprepareforeachclassperiodbydoingthereadinginarigorousandinquisitivemanner.Everydaythatyoucometoclassyoushouldhavesomethingvaluabletosay.Iwillgradeonactualparticipation,ratherthanonmereattendance.However,ifyoumissclasstwoormoretimes,Iwillloweryourcoursegradeandifyoumissmorethanthatyouwillfailthecourse.
