STABLELAB®
EQ-1 Handheld ReaderStablelab offers convenient handheld stall-side testing that completes your initial physical exam by detecting and quantifying the biomarker Serum Amyloid A (SAA) in horses. SAA is a major acute phase protein produced by the liver that rapidly and dramatically increases in response to inflammation caused by infection. By measuring SAA, veterinarians can assess the severity of an infection sooner – often, before clinical symptoms start and are able to monitor the horse’s response over the course of treatment.3,4 The key benefits of using Stablelab are:
Differentiate infection from non-infection With infectious inflammation, SAA almost always elevates above 50 µg/mL, while non-infectious inflammatory conditions rarely elevate SAA at all.3,4,5 When the horse contracts an infection, SAA rapidly and dramatically rises and once the infection has resolved, SAA will drop by 50% every 24 hours allowing you to manage a case with greater clarity than ever before.4,5
30 times more sensitive than a thermometer SAA was found to be more sensitive than a thermometer and better than traditional lab tests at detecting subclinical infections – allowing a new kind of number for a new kind of certainty.3,4
An evolution in rapid diagnostics Stablelab is a significant advancement in stall-side, point-of-care equine diagnostics. Stablelab is trusted by thousands of equine veterinarians in 25 countries worldwide.6
i-STAT® ALINITY vHandheld AnalyzerThe i-STAT Alinity v is a portable, handheld analyzer that delivers lactate, blood gases, acid-base, electrolytes, chemistry, and hematology results in 2–3 minutes. Important information gathered can help monitor chronic disease patients, evaluate pre-anesthetic patients, and provide diagnostic specialty testing information for ill patients in the exam room or barn side. Advantages for the equine practitioner include:
• Fluid therapy decisions at the point of care
• Intraoperative acid-base and blood gas analysis
• Lactate for field colics and pre and post-op colic surgeries
• Diarrhea diagnosis, especially in foals
• Electrolyte monitoring for ruptured bladders, endurance, and eventing
• Acid-base and electrolytes to better diagnose systemic diseases

VETSCAN® HM5Hematology AnalyzerThe VETSCAN HM5 is a fully-automated, 5-part differential hematology analyzer that delivers a comprehensive 22-parameter complete blood count (CBC) with cellular histograms in 3-4 minutes. The VETSCAN HM5 enables the equine practitioner to evaluate:
Flexibility to analyze the most common and even uncommon species Ideal for veterinary clinics, zoos, barns, and research laboratories, alike.
• 5-part differential for 6 species: cat, dog, horse, cattle, alpaca, llama
• 3-part differential for 9 species: rat, mouse, rabbit, guinea pig, ferret, sheep, goat, pig, primate†
Histograms to complement differentials Blood cell populations are graphically represented by cellular histograms, which can be used to easily verify differential cell counts, help identify uncommon disease processes, or check sample integrity at a glance.
Capability to assess alternative fluid samples Identify nucleated cell counts in alternative fluids including pleural,* peritoneal,* pericardial,* and synovial fluids with the HM5. Characterize exudate samples for diagnosis, and identify potential inflammation, infections, and neoplasia at the point of care. Validated for synovial fluid in horses, and pleural and peritoneal fluid in dogs7
*Can be run on the HM5 but are not validated†For Research Use Only
• Immune system status
• Platelet count
• Erythrocyte mass and function
• Joint effusions
• Abdominal and thoracic effusions*
VETSCAN® VSPROCoagulation AnalyzerThe VETSCAN VSpro is a coagulation analyzer that offers a fibrinogen test with uncompromised accuracy for the busy equine hospital.8 The VETSCAN VSpro enables practitioners to:
• Monitor inflammation that occurs before overt signs of infection or other parameters change
• Monitor response to therapy with precision and accuracy
• Delivers results for a better understanding of the disease process
Reference laboratory quality fibrinogen results in-clinic or barn-side8 Rapid, automated equine fibrinogen testing without the hassles, delays, and costs associated with the “old manual protocol” of testing or using commercial lab services. Monitor inflammation that occurs before overt signs of infection or other parameters change, and evaluate response to therapy with precision, accuracy, and true quantitative values.
OVUCHECK® PREMATE 10Progesterone Test Kit9
Ovucheck PREMATE is a semi-quantitative test for the measurement of progesterone in a drop of plasma or serum. The quantity of progesterone present is indicated by a change in color, which is compared with progesterone standards (low, intermediate and high). This kit is quick and simple to use.
It provides useful information for the reproduction of small or miniature mares, such as:
• When the mare's genital exam is contradictory
• When the mares do not show regular estrous cycle during transition period or during the reproduction season
• To confirm ovulation
• To follow the first trimester of high risk gestations
• To maximize the gestation rate during embryo transfer programs
• For reproduction of small or miniature mares
Diagnostic offerings from Zoetis can be utilized in a variety of cases.
Ambulatory Diagnostics The typical ambulatory call for a sick patient involves obtaining the patient history and performing a physical examination. Without quantitative results, the diagnosis and/or prognosis is a best guess estimate.
Without SAA, CBC, chemistry, and fibrinogen results stall-side, the equine practitioner must obtain samples, return to the office, run the blood, call the owner, schedule another visit based on the results, and then return to the patient. This may cause:
• Delay in diagnosis and treatment
• Significant cost in time with phone calls and additional travel – poor efficiency
• Reduced compliance for additional testing
• Reduced value from a client perspective
The VETSCAN VS2, i-STAT Alinity v, and Stablelab can provide stall-side diagnostics and enable you to incorporate senior or preventive programs into routine calls.
Neonatal Care The newborn has its own specific testing requirements, with important baseline values including IgG, SAA, CBC, and chemistry. Combining diagnostics from Zoetis can help you differentiate common early clinical conditions with similar presentations, such as:
• Neonatal septicemia
• Neonatal isoerythrolysis
• Ruptured bladder
• Diarrhea
• Failure of passive transfer
• Foal pneumonia
• Physical examination
• Fecal evaluation
• Coggins testing
• Yearly deworming protocol
• Vaccinations
Infectious Disease For the hospitalized patient with infectious disease, immediate results and monitoring are vital to providing timely care.
• SAA, or CBC and fibrinogen results help monitor response to therapy
• Chemistry results help monitor organ function
• Acid-base/electrolytes direct proper fluid therapy
Geriatric Medicine Client expectations and standards of care indicate the need for regular quantitative evaluation of the geriatric patient. Early disease detection may provide for:
• Extended length and quality of life
• Improved veterinarian/client relationship and human/animal bond
• Lower costs of treatment
• Valuable baseline information
• Improved perception of the veterinarian’s value
Utilizing SAA, chemistry, CBC, and other diagnostics from Zoetis helps the equine hospital build a value-added diagnostic program in addition to:
Pre-purchase Examinations It is vital that horse owners feel comfortable in the purchase of a new horse. Pre-purchase exams are the safest way for a client to feel confident about their decision. The exam should go beyond the basic physical and lameness evaluation by examining organ health and inflammatory markers.
Stall-side testing with routine bloodwork screening may identify subclinical disease prior to purchase.
Performance Horses
Point-of-care testing is vital for patients under-performing or with acute concerns.
The diagnostic offerings from Zoetis enables practitioners to quickly evaluate:
• Myositis
• Respiratory disease
• Colic
• General health evaluations during extended use
