natural,
cycle-oriented,
sustainable biobased economy
that carries the promise of
global food supplies that are both
ample and healthy,

From SRA – Systems Biology in Europe 2016:
Our objectives
Use synergies between current mechanisms of biotechnology research
funding in Europe
to highlight the benefits of a bio-based economy for society, and thus
to maintain and strengthen Europe’s global lead in modern
biotechnology.
Bundling three predecessor ERA-Nets in the area of biotechnology
significantly increases public funding (call volume ~ 36 Mio €),
intensifies collaboration across relevant sectors and countries, thus
advancing RD&I in industrial biotechnology
establishing systems and synthetic biology as technology
drivers in applied biotechnology, and
enhancing the potential for exploitation through active industry
involvement.

National negotiations
Additional joint funding activities (without EC co-funding)
Advance RD&I in industrial biotechnology in line with the Strategic
Agenda and the outcomes of the "European Biotechnology Hub."
Depending on the availability of funds, one funding activity per year (up
to four funding activities after the co-funded call)
calls for research projects
scientific knowledge hubs
mobility awards
prizes
measures for capacity building etc..
European Biotechnology Hub - Objectives
Integrate actors from all parts of biotechnology value chains and
from all relevant scientific areas and industry sectors
policy actors,
strategic European Instruments & Initiatives
scientific and industrial actors
Provide one central umbrella to
biotechnology-relevant activities
for Europe and beyond
(e.g. EC, ERA-Nets, JTIs, PPP, KICs,
PLATFORM)
Biotech Hub Meetings
What happens?
Presenting and discussing of strategic issues, challenges, activities
Exchange of experiences regarding different and common actions
of ERA-Nets and other strategic European instruments and
initiatives in related areas
Outcome
Exchange of knowledge, „best practice“, experiences regarding
regional, national and European actions and strategies
Networks and collaborations are enlarged or strengthened
Topics for future ERA-Nets (or additional calls) or ideas for other
forms of ollaboration between policy makers and funding bodies
Recommendations to the EC
Biotech Hub Workshops
Who?
scientific and industrial actors
What happens?
Training
Ideas, demands, concepts are discussed/developed
Networks are made or strengthened
Outcome
Better understanding of other stakeholders‘ demands and ways of
working
Newly developed consortia and project ideas
New knowledge and skills, e.g. regarding European collaboration
Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
maximise the long term benefit of bringing together 3 previously
separate ERA-Nets to achieve the goals of:
speeding up research and innovation in industrial
biotechnology
establishing systems biology and synthetic biology as
technology drivers while focusing on downstream industrial
applications
Shared vision, identifying areas
where synthetic biology,
systems biology, and industrial
biotechnology can be aligned to
have the most impact
Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
Strategic Connections (Identification and mapping of existing relevant
national, EU, international initiatives and infrastructure).
Strategic workshops
-> The strategic agenda will describe:
areas of strategic importance between the three previous ERA-Nets,
where there is added value in advancing those areas through
transnational activities
the extent of coordination at that time which will serve as a baseline
indicator against which increases in coordination and cooperation
can be measured
a mutually agreed (and realistic) understanding of what CoBioTech
can achieve
Negative public perception
Risk of negative public perception (combined with a lack of knowledge,
e.g. „gene technology“ / „green biotechnology“)
Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
Expectations and a best practice RRI framework
develop bespoke expectations and best practice RRI framework
integrate the uptake of these guidelines into funding assessment
require funded projects to report against the expectations set out in
the RRI best practice framework
Training of scientists
