Youth unemployment rate and unemployment ratio in EU countries

.• The unemployment rate relates to the young people who are

available in the labour market

• The unemployment ratio calculates the share of unemployed for the whole population (age cohort)

• Next table shows that youth unemployment ratios in the EU are much lower than youth unemployment rates

Prolonged transition into the labour market(Education at Glance - OECD 2012)

• EU`s Lisbon strategy 2000 aimed at making Europe more dynamic and competitive to secure a prosperous, fair and environmentally sustainable future for all citizens

• This kind of aim need high educated citizens and professionals in the labour market

• Higher education means more years at school and universities - and in a mean time - prolonged transition into the labour market

• Young person will establish his/her position in the labour market in the age of 27-28 that is 75% employment rate (Finland and Sweden statistics)

NEET in the context of school structure –comparisons between Finland, Germany and

Netherlands

How do we calculate the amount of young people outside the school and labour market?

• Spain - Example– Unemployment rate 55%– Unemployment ratio 21%– Outside the labour market and school 20%– Outside the labour market and school and have

the feeling and experience that they are unemployed 13%

• The age groups– 15-19, 20-24, 25-29 – make the difference!!!
