WHAT IS CGCP?A Comprehensive Guidance & Counseling Program is a competency-based programmatic approach to school counseling and associated educational units (e.g., career, technical, nurses, school psychologists) which is designed to be:

o multi-systemic (school, home, and community)o collaborative (educators, families, community members)o developmental (aimed at helping students at their developmental level)o proactive and prevention-minded (supports students before crisis)o accountable to the stakeholders o educationally focused (helps students to reach educational, career, and

personal-social goals)

VISION + SKILLS + INCENTIVE + RESOURCES + = TREADMILL

MANAGING CHANGE USING MODELS WITH STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

•.

• Make a clear case for how you can be a strong positive influence in fulfilling the overall mission of the school, i.e. AYP.• Management agreement discussed and signed• Buy-in from faculty & staff, i.e. involvement• Buy-in from parents & PTA• Regular feedback/meetings with principal. i.e. what can I do within my area of expertise and guidelines to help make your job easier?• Advocating for all students in all the domains-

academic, personal/social, career• Being a resource, consultant, confidante

MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK

WA CGCP FRAMEWORK /ASCA NATIONAL MODEL

WHY THE ASCA NATIONAL AND WA STATE FRAMEWORKS?

• More time with students - Less time with paperwork

• More time spent on counseling - Less time spent on non-counseling duties

• More comprehensive programming – a focus for the program - Less “random acts of guidance”

• Better results for all students• It is the “right thing to do for students”

FRAMEWORK WRITING TEAM MEMBERS

• Richard Cleveland (WSCA)• Dr. Diana Gruman (WWU)• Megyn Shea (WSCA)• Dr. Chris Sink (SPU)• Norm Walker (WSCA)• Dr. Chris Wood (SU)• Karyn Holt (WSCA)• Dave Forrester (WSCA)• Representatives from the WA-ACTE CGCA division• Danise Ackelson (OSPI)• Mike Hubert (OSPI)

2. What could you contribute from your own efforts to this body of web-based resources?

Counselors And PrincipalsDo what counselors do best:1.Get personal – find out about your principal / tell them about yourself2.Develop empathy – the support you give your principal will come back to you 3.Build respect:

Be student-centered: remain an advocate for students

Be solution-focused: problem-solving requires cooperation

Keep your principal informed Use data to show/prove your (counseling

program) reason for existence 19

4. Make a clear case for how you can be a strong positive influence in fulfilling the overall mission of the school, i.e. AYP.
