• A paradigm shift is taking place from the conventional mode of learning to virtual way learning.

• Technical Teachers need to keep updated in technological areas and in instructional design and delivery systems.

• NITTTRs mandate is to train teachers of Technical Institutions (Engineering Colleges and Polytechnic Colleges).

Need for Virtual Learning Environment

Traditional mode of training takes long time to cover the total population.

Phenomenal increase in the number of technical institutions envisages developing a Virtual Learning Environment.

Virtual Learning Environment is cost effective over a period of time.

Number of participants for on-campus training programmes is on the decrease

Objectives

The main Objective of establishing e-training environment @ NITTTR is To provide quality training to technical teachers and in turn make students learn effectively through trained teachers

(contd…)

Objectives (contd…)

The enabling objectives are: To design and develop e-learning environment,

taking advantage of the capabilities of the Internet and multimedia to provide on-line learning facilities to technical teachers.

To extend training from centralised training institutions into the teacher trainee’s own working environment.

To facilitate technical institutions encourage teachers to utilize training opportunities through e-learning environment in the present day situation of shortage of faculty.

(contd…)

Objectives (contd…)

To train a large number of technical teachers in pedagogical competencies, classroom management, guidance and counselling and content related areas.

To support the training of students of CPS which mainly aims at skill development of rural youths.

To design and develop e-learning resources in engineering courses to students studying in engineering colleges and polytechnics.

To offer on-line programmes for community and for teachers and educational administrators from overseas countries.

• Emerging and Hi-tech areas• Management Areas It is proposed to customize the content developed

with LMS for online delivery.

Deliverables (contd…)

• It is proposed to develop Courseware for atleast for 2 disciplines in the complete form during the project period which would contain the following:

Course contentLesson Plan & Teacher Support MaterialEvaluation Strategies

MethodologyIt is proposed to implement the various stages of the e-learning environment in a phased manner as furnished below.Phase 1: Establishing e-learning environment

Phase 2: Strengthening the infrastructure in the institute and its Extension Centres

Phase 3: Networking with Technical and Vocational Education Institutions including CPSC, Manila, Technological Universities and other institutions

Phase 4: Offering continuing education and community programmes on-line

Phase 5: Off-shore Campus

Implementation

• Phase 1 and Phase 2 will be completed during the Project period 2010-12.

• Phase 3, Phase 4 and Phase 5 is proposed to be taken up subsequently.

• During the project period, it is expected that the e-Training environment would be established in its full form.

• With this environment and with the experience gained it is possible to offer training programmes online. Work Plan

Materials development will be taken up by engaging consultants / developers on contract basis on consolidated remuneration.

Benefits• A life long learning to technical teachers, students

and society and also provide the potential for teacher education to be moved out of centralized training institutions into the teacher trainee’s own working environment.

• Coverage of a large population; distance and time factors are being eliminated gradually

• Deputing teachers for external training programmes will be minimized in the present day situation of shortage of faculty in the technical institutions.

(contd…)

Benefits(Contd…)

• The recurring expenses for teachers in attending training programmes will be minimized and could be even eliminated in the long run.

• The coverage through e-learning / training would supply certified professionals for handling the upcoming challenges efficiently.

• It is expected that the certified professionals would form a community that meets the societal demands.

(contd…)

Benefits(Contd…)

• As mentioned by our Honourable Prime Minister recently, the need to strengthen Polytechnics, ITI / Vocational trades, all the above materials will be easily adapted for Skill Development Programmes.
