How do you get hands on experience as a chemical engineering student?

Problem Statement

Very theoretical and math heavy.

Not a lot of hands-on learning opportunities.

Small scale process is completely different from a large scale.

What resource is really in demand?

Problem Statement

Oil

Solution

RPI student project started in the fall of 2012.

Working to develop a large scale manufacturing process.

How it works:1. Taking used vegetable oil from campus dining halls.2. Converting vegetable oil into biodiesel.3. Give back to community and customers.4. Develop more effective processes and integrate academia.

ESW-Biodiesel

Solution

Biodiesel is produced by a simple transesterification reaction on the triglycerides commonly found in vegetable oils.

The reaction yields fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) and glycerol byproduct which can be used to produce soap.

The chemical and physical properties of the biodiesel product are dependent on the composition of the fatty acid chains.

Production Process

Solution

Biodiesel contains around 34 MJ of energy/Liter Diesel contains around 40 MJ of energy/Liter

Biodiesel contains slightly less energy per liter, but its other benefits can outweigh the energy deficiency.

Growth Strategy

Initial target market consists of college students in chemical engineering + sustainability.

Bring strategy to other campuses.

Recruit via conferences andorganizations + colleges.

Accomplishments

Raised $20,000 in capital.

Developed partnerships with local community, Sodexo, etc.

10+ community outreach events done.

Heavily trafficked website.

Small scale R&D is completed.

Timeline

Get RPI’s approval to spend money.

Purchase large-scale reactor.

Develop optimization strategy at larger scale.

Advertising through channels like TvCOG, Farmer’s Market, etc.

Cost analysis at a larger scale.
