What is the ENtopia Project?

Objective: Establish a pan-European Network of traditional settlements

Different localities that may join the network (whether small parts of towns, cities, islands or sites) should:

maintain -as far as possible- authentic natural and architectural characteristics

maintain their customs and traditions, including traditional production

support local government committed to sustainable development of the locality with respect for its cultural heritage

Any locality that joins the network will be reassed after 3 years in the light of development over that period

The village square is surrounded by old mansions, which have been restored. These mansions are all two storeys high and built tightly next to each other in order to form a wall.

"What human beings need is

not utopia ('no place'), but

Entopia ('in place') ... a place

which satisfies the dreamer

and is acceptable to the

scientist, a place where the

projections of the artist and

the Builder merge”.

These settlements were established during Genoese rule (1346-1566), and until today the villages’ existence is inextricably bound up with the valuable

crystal “tear” shed by mastic trees that grow only here and only in the southern part of the island.

Rare endemic plants such as Aethionema retsina, Campanula merxmuelleri, Centaurea rechingeri, Scorzonera scyria, Aubrieta scyria, Galanthus ikariae grow in inaccessible rocky

places, mainly in the southern partof the island.

On the steep cliffs of Mount Kochylas and the nearby islets, are nests of Falcon (Falco eleonorae), a migratory falcon that is a globally threatened species. Greece is considered as the most important country for its survival since hosts 85% of the world population of the species. •Southern Skyros has been for centuries the natural habitat of the indigenous breed of Skyros horses (Equus cabalus skyriano), unique in the world today, considered to be under threat of extinction by the European Union.

•These horses play a significant role in the rural heritage of the island, since in the past they were used by locals for farming, especially during the summer months

“Krokellos”, is the highest point (821 m) dominating the north-west. The area from Langada village to the island’s northern tip is a protected area, part of the Natura 2000 network.

Chora, the Saracen island and the area of Ormos Kalogrias, Atsitsa and a neighbouring pine forest have been designated as Landscapes of Outstanding Natural Beauty according to Greek

The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, founded in 1017 by monks fleeing persecution in Palestine, is one of the older in the Aegean. Refounded in 1088 it hangs on a cliffside 300 metres above the sea. Its annual feast is

on 21 November, celebrating the entry of the Mother of God into the Temple.
