Transportable.Fall 2014.Out of the Box Award.

The Flocking housing competition hosted by the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative was a single weekend design challenge to produce a transportable housing unit which could reduce vacant housing in postindustrial cities. The approach was to design a modular unit which could adapt to varying environments. Mobility was considered a primary concern where independent sections of the unit rotate and lock into one another, forming a compact

unit. The profile allows the entire unit to act like a wheel, permitting small scale mobility without the need for a crane. This opens up the potential for the unit as it can be exposed to diverse environments which have limited accessibility. In urban environments the units can be lifted in their compact forms, stacked, then expanded for habitation.

A Flexible furniture system allows for multiple arrangements while maintaining minimal square footage so that the structure remains as light as possible. Keeping construction limited to light materials allows for the unit to be physically rolled by a human while also making transportation and reconfiguration more feasible.

The Co-Housing community located on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina activates the beach front property by distributing traditional residential elements throughout the site. The essentiality of transportation to the site is recognized by integrating infrastructure and formalizing circulation across bilateral axes. Separating essential residential elements develops a spacial sequence across the axes. This sequence separates the rooms

into a bi-directional series of entrance, place, and exit, corresponding with the mode of entry. These two axes converge at a critical point of divergence formed by the angling paths. The paths cut through or build on top of the topography creating a positive and negative relationship between the axes, meriting the convergence point as the sole point of access to the outdoor rooms.

Situated along the pathway running between the dock and outdoor rooms, the micro house acts as a point of passage between infrastructure and housing. The house marks the point of entry as it transitions between programs, acting much like a traditional vestibule which transitions from interior to exterior. The tiny house is designed to make as minimal an

impact on the fluidity of the spatial sequence as possible. Apertures are concentrated on the East and West facades creating a transparency occurring in both directions. This transparency frames views to either the beach horizon or the activity and life of the outdoor rooms.

The Outdoor room occurs where the two infrastructure axes converge. This point of convergence marks the critical point of circulation where the dock meets grade or land meets sea. Living and recreation functions are centered on the axes which cut through the outdoor rooms dividing them into two independent yet connected spaces. Acting as the social center of the house,

the outdoor room functions as the heart of the site where people can gather, socialize, eat, and relax while surrounded in their natural context. The node radiates outward towards hierarchical arms of privacy, allowing varying levels of function to branch from a central hearth or space.

Multi-family and multi-functional, the co-house is paradoxical in nature. Individually the co-house contains the private living necessities for the residents. In regards to the site as a whole, the house functions as a gateway transnational from the street to the site. These two contradictory functions of privacy yet monumentality take form through a paradigmatic form of the archway. Circulation cuts through the structure while the visual mass, framing the aperture, retains residence privacy.

Taking advantage of the diurnal cycle, the collective housing project uses varying levels of light to convey moods and suggest residential functions. This atmospheric effect shifts as the azimuth and altitude of the sun varies throughout the day and year. This allows individual spaces to preform most efficiently at the typical time of use. Public spaces flood with direct light while private spaces allow a softer, diffuse light. Color plays a crucial role in this

variation. Warm colors are used to emphasize energy and activity in public spaces while cool colors promote relaxation and calmness. Composed of nine two-storey units and two flats, each unit has a unique exposure to qualities of light. The building is split to maximize southern exposure to the units and creates a public courtyard between the units for urban life to thrive,

Orienting the units south allows for maximum exposure to the diurnal cycle. Program is planed according to the typical use of the space as it relates to light. Three unique, yet modular two-story units are repeated throughout the housing complex. Each unit responds to its orientation and the preferences of the inhabitants. The eastern and western units allow for typical relationships between light and program while the central unit is inverted allowing inhabitants to select the unit which corresponds with their personal lifestyle. A primary color pattern is stretched and mirrored across the facade

creating a rhythm between elements and corresponding to the program use behind by size, color, prominence, and opacity. These elements are layered on top of one another, allowing for the variation in atmosphere as the sun shifts. In high energy areas, warm colored elements are given transparency and pushed to the front of the facade so that they may penetrate into the space, painting the walls with color while cool colors correspond to lower energy spaces. The layering of transparent elements allows the primary colors to mix creating a dynamic atmosphere.

Volumetric Voids is a proposal for the extension for The Humanistic Library for the University of Florence which relates to its historic context on Piazza Brunelleschi through a language of scale and proportion. A grid is laid over the site through which a glass box is extruded with dimensional queues coming from the context. This volume is then filled with programmatic volumes formed into

three groupings of commercial, educational, and cultural blocks. The manner in which the programmatic volumes are arranged within the larger volume gives emphasis to the negative space between them. The negative space between the volumes becomes the public space within the building, forming cultural platforms for interaction between programmed elements.

The interior public spaces are blended with the exterior, creating an unique dialogue between piazza and palazzo. The grid which defines the structure is continued to the exterior to create an underlying order to the piazza. This order is then used to create a series of points, planes, and volumes. These conceptual elements give function and life to the piazza, allowing a flexible program within the piazza.

Youngstown is a city defined by its voids and boundaries. The proposed sustainable manufacturing center addresses these conditions acting as the pivotal point connecting segmented districts in the city. The site composed of parking lots and a road is redeveloped, creating a green belt which envelops the city. Axes are created through stretched volumes which define urban spaces and pathways, linking developing districts within

the city and engaging the community with the building. Activity within the building is showcased through a transparency between shuffled program elements, providing unconventional interior connections which serve to educate both the community and students. A cross-pollination of ideas in order to develop dialogue between education, community, and innovation.

Louvers: Day Lighting.An operable louver system is implemented which allows the building to respond to the suns position, maximizing interior daylighting while open, and minimizing internal heat gain when closed.

Louvers: Energy Generation.The paneling system is constructed of etched, photo-voltaic panels which act to block direct light form passing into the building and turn the blocked light into renewable energy. The operable panel system increases the efficacy of the PV panels by tracking the sun for the ideal orientation.

Kalwal Glazing: Daylighting.A translucent glazing system provides diffuse daylight to the interior while maximizing the thermal resistance of the envelope.

Size + Orientation.The volumes slender proportions are ideal for passive daylighting and ventilation. The majority of the volumes are given maximum southern exposure to increase the possibility of controlled solar heat gain, energy generation, and daylighting.

Venturi Effect: Passive Ventilation.Pulling apart the volumes creates a central, vertical space which catches the prevailing winds from the West, using the Venturi effect which compresses the air and increases its velocity.
