Face recognition is a
biological characteristics
recognition technology,
using the inherent
physiological features of
humans for ID
recognition.
Facial recognition systems are
computer-based security
systems that are able to
automatically detect and
identify human faces by
comparing selected facial
features from the image and
a facial database.. These
systems depend on a
recognition algorithm, such
as eigenface .
Facial recognition technology falls into a larger group of technologies
known as biometrics. Biometrics uses biological information to verify
identity. Authentication methods include:
Fingerprint scan Retina scan Voice identification
When the system is attached
to a video surveillance
system , the recognition
software searches the field
of view of a video camera to
recognize a human face and
extract it from the rest of the
scene.
Nodal points
Distance between the eyes
Width of the nose
Depth of the eye sockets
The shape of the
cheekbones
The length of the jaw line
Hair color
Presence of glasses detection
Once a face is detected, the system
determines the head's position, size
and pose. A face needs to be turned
at least 35 degrees toward the
camera for the system to register it.
The image of the head is scaled
and rotated so that it can be
registered and mapped into an
appropriate size and pose.
The system translates the facial data into a unique code. This coding
process allows for easier comparison of the newly acquired facial
data to stored facial data.
The newly acquired facial data is compared to the stored data
and linked to at least one stored facial representation.

In Security Purposes
German Federal Police at Frankfurt Rhein-
Main international airport
Australia Custom Service (passport
verification)
US Department of State (for visa
processing)
Casinos (to catch blacklisted individual)
Police of Florida (to search for criminals
and terrorists)
Maxican govt.(to eliminate voter frauds)
Potential users
In companies Unlock mobile devices
Eliminating voter fraud In digital cameras
Computer security Check-cashing
identity verification
The main advantages are:
The information is unique for each individual and it can identify the individual in spite of variations in the time.
Faces can be captured from some distance away, with for example surveillance cameras.
Adaptability
cheap technology
Easy to use
Disadvantages
Differentiating twins is difficult.
If the person wore sunglasses
Lighting problem
Face recognition uses the spatial geometry of
distinguishing features of the face. The important
difference with other biometric solutions is that
faces can be captured from some distance away,
with for example surveillance cameras. Therefore
face recognition can be applied without the
subject knowing that he is being observed.
