As one of the five African Cluster Centres (ACC), the Faculty of Humanitiesat the Rhodes University is part of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence.Funded by the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and stategovernments, the cluster aims at reconfiguring African Studies through aninter- and transdisciplinary approach. By working together on researchprojects, scholars participating in the Cluster seek to achieve transdisciplinarysynergies and to develop new perspectives in various fields of research. Fromthe four African locations as well as from the ACC located in Bayreuth, theACCs altogether facilitate the exchange of ideas, the mobility of researchers,and the collection of and access to data.

The ACC Rhodes is hosted by the Rhodes University in South Africa and itsFaculty of Humanities. Drawing from various research sections, the ACCRhodes contributes to the Knowledge Lab of the Africa Multiple Clusteracross different research projects. The ACC Rhodes is specialized in the fieldsof social and political history of Africa, gender studies, trauma theory, Africanpolitics as wells as conceptual debates on African Studies. Among others,Arts and Aesthetics, including African musicology, multi-lingualism,environmental change, environmental education and water research, are alsopart of the fields of research of the ACC Rhodes. The team is made up ofscholars, spanning the gender divide and of high national and internationalreputation.
