Period 5

What is it?

• A fashion designer designs clothes for people to wear.

• There are many different areas of fashion design, including women’s wear, men’s wear, and couture, among others.

• My ideal career is to specialize in couture. I chose this career because it is a way to transform pure art into a wearable form.

Haute Couture

• Couture is a type of fashion which focuses on the aesthetic rather than the practical.

• Some well-known coutriers include Dior, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, and Versace.

• A single couture dress can take three months to make.

Colleges

• There are many excellent art colleges all over the country, which offer classes on all kinds of arts, including fashion design.

• If you live in northern California and are looking to build a substantial career in the arts, San Francisco is one of the best places to go. It has a good selection of some of the highest-rated art schools in the state, and numerous opportunities for employment and to showcase your work.

Salary

• Average Annual Wage: California--$64,069 U.S.--$56,340

• Average Hourly Wage: California--$30.80 U.S.--$27.09

Secondary Career

• My alternative career choice is to be an artist.

Why did I choose this?

• I chose ‘artist’ as a secondary career because, while it is something I enjoy doing and am fairly good at, it is much harder to make a living from.

• The distinction between the fine arts and other arts is that they are simply for visual enjoyment and have no practical use.

• ‘Fine arts’ is a broad category which denotes a spectrum of subcategories, including these: Painting, Sculpting, Drawing, and others.

Salary

• Average Annual Wage: California--$44,417 U.S.--$38,330

• Average Hourly Wage: California--$21.35 U.S.--$18.43
