WEEKS DEVELOPMENT SIZE

2 Weeks Sperm and Egg unite Less than grain of salt

3 Weeks Embryo begins to implant in uterus. Blood test can

be positive.

4 Weeks Embryo is attached to lining of uterus.

5 Weeks Heart is the size of a poppy see and is beating.

Brain development is beginning

6 Weeks Brain & spinal cord are formed. Heart can be seen

beating on an ultrasound.

1/8 inch

7 Weeks Baby is making his own blood. Depending on the

gender, testicles or ovaries are developing.

1/3 inch

8 Weeks Lungs begin to develop. Movements of limbs and

trunk are seen.

9 Weeks Ears & Nose are visible, and pigment is present in the eyes. ¾ inch, 1/8 ounce

11 Weeks Eyes are formed and kidneys produce urine. He yawns & sucks. 2 inches

14 Weeks Can find his thumb to suck it. He swallows and urinates. 3 ½ inches

16 Weeks Heart is pumping 6 gallons of blood each day. He can coordinate

the movement of his arms & legs.

5 inches, 4 ounces

18 Weeks Reflexes of blinking & frowning are developed. He has unique

fingerprints and toeprints.

7 ounces

20 Weeks He has a favorite position to sleep in. Studies indicate he can

feel pain.

10 inches, 11 ounces

24 Weeks He recognizes mom’s voice, breathing & heartbeat. He inhales

amniotic fluid in preparing to breathe.

1 ½ pounds
