FIBA: Impact on Coaches

Strategy • offensive flow• defence - disrupting flowTactics • time outs – wise use, force opponent to waste • subs - use more players, adjust through • last two minutes• work closely with minor officialsCreate instinctive coaches, run better practices Less time to communicate with official more time to coach players

24/8: Impact on Coaching

Pace of the game?• Walking the ball up vs. no pressure. • Hold the balling ball in the half court.

“Ball stoppers” • Skill of the players.

– Pattern offences that reverse the ball 5 times are a thing of the past. You need players who can create a shot for themselves or others.

Style of Defence: Impact on Coaching

With 8/24…

• Will we see more zone?

• Will we see more pressure?» 2 ways of thinking

Trapezoid Key: Impact on Coaching

• Change the position of the block, may be better to be in the mid post, short corner.

• Posts need more face up/dribble moves• No advantage on the FT lane block out for the

defence. New block out techniques?• Spreads the floor for middle penetration.

Time Outs: Impact on Coaching

Time Outs: Requested at the table

• Must train our minor officials properly in FIBA. They have much more responsibility.

• Will the good officials watch for/anticipate timeouts being called?

Time Outs: Impact on Coaching

Time Outs: Less Timeouts. Less flexibility of when to call the timeout.

• Players need to be able to make decisions and know what to do in an end game situation.

• Less chance for the coach to screw them up!

Time Outs: Impact on Coaching

Time Outs: Advancing the ball in the last 2 min. of 4th and OT

• Saves time in advancing the ball. • Coaches need to be ready and anticipate a

made shot or by the other team or stoppage in play.

• Intentional miss FT at the end of the game?

Back Over Center: Impact on Coaching

Must keep the ball moving at the half court line

• Do you trap at center?• Do you force a turn/change of direction or lateral

dribble at center?

Handle in the Backcourt: Impact on Coaching

• Slows the pace for some teams.

• Referee point of emphasis.

Keep the game moving quickly.

Frontcourt Inbounds: Impact on Coaching

Can not inbound the ball from the frontcourt into the back court.

• Coaches need to practice inbounds from difficult positions. Eg. Just over the center line. With Less than 8 sec. in backcourt.

Subs on FT: Impact on Coaching

Can not sub in between FT. Only when it is being reported and on a made 2nd FT.

• Get your subs early. • Be ready for the star player’s 3rd/4th foul.

Points of Emphasis: Impact on Coaching

Do we still have the old points of emphasis?

• Carry ball• Physical play in the post• Hand Check• 30 Second meeting after 5th foul?

These are not P.O.E. in FIBA.
