Field Project ADMS 625 Amy A. Peterman
To design & implement a collaborative program for special education students at Greenmont Elementary School.
To provide training and support for general & special education teachers who are implementing the collaborative teaching model.
To provide training & support for all teachers regarding the implementation & follow through of IEP’s.
OBJECTIVES
It is our goal at Greenmont Elementary to provide a
balanced educational program to all students. It is
our hope that through training and support, we can
implement an effective collaborative teaching model
in the general education classroom setting.
Vision
Objective 1: Program DesignCollaborative teaching model will be implemented in grades
1-5 for the 2014-2015 school year. Each grade level, based on special education numbers, will
have at least 1 collaborative class on each grade level team.
The role of each teacher will depend on the students’ needs and academic goals.
The main focus of the special education teacher is to ensure that each child’s IEP goals and objectives are being met within the proper time frame.
We hope that the collaborative teaching model will allow teachers to work as a team to ensure that all students are reaching their highest potential.
Students placed in the collaborative model will be based on
academic and social needs and how the teachers can best meet the child’s IEP.
Administrators and teachers will review IEP’s to see how the student is best served
Objective 1: Program Design (Contd)
Objective 2: Collaborative Teacher Training
It is vital that teachers participating in this model are well trained and prepared for their students.
It is our goal to provide training and support throughout the
year to ensure academic success.
We will be implementing the Collaborative Teaching Model based on Dr. Jerry Whitworth’s research.
The research for this model includes 7 steps for teacher training.
Teachers will be working together to implement and instruct the students on the curriculum.
Teachers may instruct by subject or splinter off into
different areas of a subject.
Steps for teacher training1. Co-teaching:
Teachers must be given adequate time to plan and adjust their lessons.
Time needs to be built into their daily schedule so they are not forced to stay after school.
Steps for teacher training
2. Collaborative Planning:
Students must be engaged in-group activities throughout the day
It is essential that ALL students have the opportunity to interact with one another while building self-esteem and peer relationships.
Steps for teacher training3. Cooperative Learning:
The curriculum must be modified and adapted to meet the needs of all students.
It is the teachers’ goal to ensure that curriculum is made relevant and engaging so all students can meet the highest expectations.
Steps for teacher training4. Integrated Curriculum:
To ensure that comprehension of content is taking place; teachers must also integrate activities across the curriculum.
By having students complete hands-on activities and projects, students can apply what they have learned in various ways.
Steps for teacher training5. Integrated activities:
Teachers will evaluate all students within the classroom in a variety of ways.
Evaluations will be used to remediate instruction if necessary.
Teachers will plan evaluations together and make modifications and accommodations as necessary.
Steps for teacher training6. Collaborative Evaluation:
Students will learn to work with one another to accomplish goals and tasks throughout the school year.
This will allow students to learn from one another while
forging bonds between them.
It is our hope that students will learn to appreciate and embrace the differences we all have and share.
Steps for teacher training7. Group Process Skills:
Understanding the process of writing & following an Individualized Education plan (IEP) is an essential part of teaching in general.
Throughout the school year, staff members will receive training on the IEP process.
During this training, teachers will work in teams to look over IEP’s & see if they can identify the strengths & weaknesses of the IEP.
We will implement an IEP checklist to be used in future meetings to ensure that we are following all procedures and guidelines correctly.
Objective 3: IEP Training
It is our hope that in the coming school year, we will
implement a collaborative program that benefits all
students.
Finally
By following the three steps we have outlined here, we will provide the best education and training for our
students and staff.
Thank You
