ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE 2
ACTION: Identify Doctrinal targeting terms and symbols.
CONDITION: Given a list of doctrinal targeting terms and symbols.
STANDARD: Correctly identify the doctrinal targeting symbol and its definition.
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
What is a Target?
• A target is personnel, material, or a piece of terrain that is numbered for firing and/or future reference
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
Target DesignatorsTarget designators consist of two letters followed by four numerals, for example, AA1000. The two-letter group denotes the originator of the target. The first letter designates a particular nation or a corps associated with a particular nation. The second letter is assigned by corps down to brigade level. Blocks of numbers are assigned by those headquarters having two assigned letters.
NUMBERS ASSIGNED TO
0001-1999 FSE
2000-2999 FSO, lowest numbered maneuver battalion task force or squadron1
3000-3999 FSO, second lowest numbered maneuver battalion task force or squadron
4000-4999 FSO, third lowest numbered maneuver battalion task force or squadron
5000-6999 Additional FSOs
7000-7999 FDC, direct support FA battalion
8000-8999 Counterfire targets
9000-9999 Spare
1Lowest regimental number
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
Target DesignatorsA battalion task force or squadron-size element with a block of numbers may suballocate numbers as shown in Table 1-5. Normally assign two targets in blocks of five. Consult unit tactical standing operating procedures (TSOP) for specific unit target numbers.
NUMBERS ASSIGNED TO
000-199 FSO or FSE
200-299 FIST, Company Team A
300-399 FIST, Company Team B
400-499 FIST, Company Team C
500-599 FIST, Company Team D
600-699 COLTs, Knights
700-799 Maneuver battalion or company team mortars or squadron howitzer battery
800-999 As required
Note: If additional numbers are needed, company team FSOs get them from supervising FSEs.

Sources of Targets
• Forward Observers• Scouts• Intelligence Assets• Target Acquisition Radars• Aerial Observers
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
TARGET TYPES
• Target of Opportunity– Target which appears and against
which no attack has been prearranged
• Planned Target– A target against which fires have
been prearranged
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
PLANNED TARGETS
• On-Call
• Scheduled
• Priority Target
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
ON CALL TARGET
• Planned Target that is not scheduled for attack at a specified time
• May be attacked when requested• Less reaction time required then for
a Target of Opportunity
- FM 6-20-50
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
Scheduled Target
• Planned Target that will be attacked at a specified time
• May be related to a H-hour or a critical event
- FM 6-20-50
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
PRIORITY TARGET• Takes Priority over all other requests
for fire• Designated by the maneuver
commander• Clarify size• Offense• Defense• Most responsive
- FM 6-20-50
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
Final Protective Fires(FPF)
• Type of Priority Target• Designated by the Maneuver Commander• Integrated into the Final Protective Line• Approximately 300 meters in front of
position• Dictated by terrain• Weapon system and firing unit determines
size

• An easily recognizable point on the ground• Used to initiate, distribute and control fires• Once designated TRPs also constitute
indirect fire targets• Designate by assigning a target number

receives the mission• Determines-
– Who is going to fire?– What types of TGTs will be attacked? – When will the TGT be attacked? – Where does the commander want fires? – How will fire support be used?
• Bottom Line: Tie specific fire support actions to specific maneuver actions to optimize combat power

FIRES PARAGRAPHFIRES PARAGRAPH• Describes the Concept Of Fires that with the scheme of maneuver
communicates how the force as a whole will achieve the Commander’s Intent.• The primary audience for the Fires Paragraph is the subordinate maneuver
commanders and their staff.• Must clearly describe the logical sequence of EFSTs and how they
contribute to the concept of operations.• The overall paragraph organization should mirror that of the scheme of
maneuver paragraph.• The format for the paragraph uses four sub categories: task, purpose,
method, effects.• Within each phase each EFST will be described in sequence of planned
execution using TPME.• EFSTs are refined from the commander’s intent and his fire support planning
guidance.
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES

A task for fire support to accomplish that is required to support a combined arms operation. Failure to achieve an EFST may require the commander to alter his tactical or operational plan. Expressed in terms of task, purpose, method, and effects.

PLOT-CR
FS White Paper
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
PLOT-CR• Purpose – What is the goal of the Target.
What are you trying to accomplish
• Location – What is the location of the Target, where it is in relation to the operation as well as its grid (min 6 digits)
• Observers – Both primary and alternate. The FSO can only be one, who is the other? PL/PSG/Sqd Ldr can also do it if they are trained.
FIGHTING WITH FIRESFIGHTING WITH FIRES
• Trigger – When does the observer make the call to execute the target, what event/time (enemy or friendly) triggers the call.
• Communication – On what radio net does the observer execute the target. Company Net? Fires Net? It needs to be clear so the primary and alternate can understand who (by call sign) to call to execute the target.
• Resources – What should the observer see when he executes the target. # and type of rounds. Now he can judge when the mission is over and he can make the call if the effects that we want have been accomplished or not.
