Figure Drawing

2 / 17

Your Brain Loves Faces

● As a result the brain tends to enlarge the facial features, which causes people to draw them larger than they are

● Your eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth take up about 3 inches at most.

● Go to a mirror, and using a marker, mark the top of your eyebrows and bottom of your lips—measure it with a ruler, you'll be surprised!

Google is your friend

● Try to use references as much as you can. The human body is complex and it will take years to memorize.

4 / 17

How to draw faces

Draw a circle. In the middle of it, draw a straight line.

5 / 17

Add a jaw line stemming from the sides of the cirlce.

6 / 17

This part gets more complicated.

The bottom of the circle is alwaysThe bottom of the nose line.

Not all faces are shaped the same,Use references.

This is Don Adams

He'll show us another trick to help us draw faces.

8 / 17

As you can see, using the method,Don Adams' face is instantly proportional!

But some people have trouble placing The eyes, nose, and mouth, still. There'sA solution!

Draw Lines Downward

Do this for the outside of the eye, the innerEye, and pupil. For Don, his nose lines upWith his inner eye, and his pulips line up withThe outter corners of his mouth!

Figures; Circles and Sausages

Stick figures are very handy! After drawing one, add 'sausages' around the limps,Neck, and so on!

Gesture Drawing

Gesture Drawing is a means to quicklyCapture a pose or the like. These drawingsAre intended to take 60 seconds in total.

We will have the model strike various posesWhile you try to draw her pose! PosesWill change every 60 seconds.

The point here is to be fast, NOT PERFECT.

Resources

● Books; Lots of artists suffer with antomy, so needing help is nothing to be ashamed of. I use 'Anatomy for the Artist', but there's literally thousands of books to choose from!

● Porn! Yes, really. This is especially helpful if you struggle with drawing boobs—there's a lot of that in porn. Because there's so much pornography, odds are you can find a pose that you may not be able to in your book.

More

● 3D modeling! A lot of older artists complain and belittle anyone who uses a 3D model to help them—I'm here to tell you those people are jerks who can't adapt well to change (And feel threatened!) I use 2 on my iPad, and they require no knowledge of 3D modeling to use. Just pose the figure, save the picture, and use it later! The banner I have displayed at my table was made this way.

● People watching; Go to a cafe, get some coffee, and sketch anyone you like!

Struggling?

● A vast majority of artists struggle with this. We all use tricks, because your brain hates you and will screw you over in drawing and coloring time and again. Don't listen to anyone who pretends to know everything off the top of their head.

● Even artists who have been drawing since before you were born use these methods, and references, to draw. One girl I know can't recongize faces, so without references, all her people look identical.

Perfect isn't always Good

● A lot of people focused on figure or life drawing want their work to look like a photograph—but if you want a photo, just take one! When cameras were invented, it was the first time artists got to draw for fun—so don't get hung up on this.

● Most popular comics aren't done in a realistic style, but more childish. Flaws have charm to them!

● Once you go to art school, you have to forget everything from it. So don't get hung up on perfection.

16 / 17

Depressed?

● A lot of artists suffer from low-self esteem with their art at some point; If this happens often, you may consider seeing a therapist. OCD (Obessive Compulsive Disorder) is very common in this field, and can make you miserable daily.

● Very few people get famous in this field—and if it's your goal, you're not going to have a good time. Do this for your own enjoyment!

Stay Healthy

● Because art isn't an exersize, it's very easy to get into bad shape. Be sure to eat well and stay active.
